My friend made the crib when his first son was born and it is so beautiful! I wish my husband could do something so special for our kids. I don't think you need to worry about it being done in time since you might not use it right away (we didn't use ours until almost 6 months), and you have the IKEA one as a backup
Since he's clearly aware of and concerned about safety standards, I say go for it!
Since you already have a crib, I would recommend for your dad to have his friend make something else like a toddler bed, toddler table/chair, high chair or anything that your kiddo will use later.

I like this idea. J am sure it is probably fine, but a handmade crib would make me nervous too.
I wouldn't, since you already have a crib, and I'd feel better knowing that the one I have complied with current safety standards and regulations. I agree with thanking him but seeing if he could make something else--a toy box, a rocking chair, a dresser, a nightstand, and rocking horse. I'd frame it as, "thank you so much! We already bought a crib, unfortunately, but love your work and could really use a _________. Would you be able to do that?"

I totally agree with all of this. Plus, something like a toy box, bookcase, dresser, etc would get much more use over the long term, so you'd get to enjoy it longer.
My dad was here two weeks ago and mentions he has a friend who is a great woodworker whom he wants to commission to make our crib, and he will pay for it. Friend has made cribs for his own children, and is aware of safety standards. He also made the box where they put my grandfather's cremated remains, and it was gorgeous.
Would you consider using a handmade crib?
Also, I am trying to decide how long to wait before setting up our own crib. I am thinking 32 weeks or so. My mom said she will take the IKEA crib for her house if we get the handmade crib.
Mainly I am paranoid about safety and whether it will get done in time.
For the two bolded reasons, my answer to your question is YES.
I would love one. Our cradle is a hand me down made by my uncle. Much better made than anything you can find at a store. I don't worry about the wood splitting when tightening the bolts like a lot of "quality" mass produced pieces.
I wouldn't have a problem with the hand-made factor, but both my kids were never fans of the crib and were in twin beds before they were 2 years old. If I was going to have something gorgeous and hand made, I'd rather it be something with a longer shelf life.

I agree with PPs suggestions to inquire about a different piece of furniture. Something like a table and chairs set or big kid bed will likely get more use than a crib as well.
My DH made ours. At first I was very resistive to the idea but after I researched all of the safety standards and he assured me the crib would meet them, I gave the go ahead. I found a picture of what I wanted in a magazine and he made it. In the end I was happy that he did because it meant a lot that he was able to make it for our girls.
I agree with the others who suggested you may want to suggest something that you can use for your child longer than a crib. In our house, our DDs only stayed in the crib for a year each. DH has also made other things for them but the crib is now gone.

Both of my kids spent their first 4+ months sleeping in a cradle that my father-in-law made for us. I would definitely let me children sleep in a handmade crib if I knew the person would do a good job and follow safety standards, which it sounds like is the case. However, I also really like the idea of doing something else since you have a crib. My father-in-law has also made us a beautiful toy box and made my nephew a rocking horse.
