There is no urgency to sell. You want to stay in the same area and you can afford what you have. My thought is why spend the money it costs to move (the realtor, the closing costs, the movers, the utter chaos) if it isn't necessary. I would stay for now but agree to discuss it again in a a specified period of time. It doesn't have to be your forever house but you don't have to sell right now either.

I'm currently living in a 2600 sq ft home with a 3 story barn, a huge roofdeck and an acre of land. By myself. I love it and don't want to sell but alas, the maintenance costs are too much for me (it was a family home). If I could swing it financially I'd stay in a heartbeat. Life is short, you should live where you love.
LOL. We had a 2400 square foot house, I swore it was too much for two people. We moved, bought a 1900 sq. ft. condo, it is so small it drives me crazy. Our new house is 2900 sq. ft. and we looked at up to 3800. I like space. That said, I also like having a private pool, and if your current house doesn't have access to one or its own that's a good reason to sell IMO.

Stay in that house, put in a pool, and then invite me to come live in your spare rooms.
You should stay. What if, in 5 years, you decide to adopt all the cats or adopt all the dogs? Or adopt all the cats AND all the dogs? Boom, perfect amount of space to become an animal hoarder!
If you love the house and aren't looking to save money on your mortgage/make money on selling your home then I would just stay. If it were me there would be some way I could use the extra space, lol.
I haven't read any of the replies, but I vote to down-size. My house is 2000 SF and it has FIVE bedrooms and huge front and back yards. The three bedrooms downstairs are just for storage. It's too much for one person, and I would say that 2800 SF is too much for two people. I am planning on selling my house in the next couple years because it's wasted space--this house would be perfect for a family that would love it and take care of it like it deserves. : )
