I always make sure to hand the waiter or waitress the tip after seeing someone steal the cash off of another person's table (didn't realise they weren't the waiter until the waiter freaked out).
I work one day a week as a server. I get all my cc tips in my paycheck the following week. I get my cash tips that night. I like getting them in the paycheck so I don't spend them right away. At my previous job I got them all at the end of the night and would throw them in bucket. I looked like a stripper with all my ones.
I have gotten terrible tips before. I actually took a picture of one once but never posted it. It was $70 on a $1200 check that I needed to split with 2 other people since it was a large party. It was horrible since they were there for 4 hours, I didn't get anyone else and it was 2 hours after I should have left (I was breastfeeding at the time and really needed a pumping break)
These are really bad. Some at the front, though, could be misleading maybe? I know people who will round their charges up to get even dollar amounts, and prefer to leave cash at the table so it doesn't get taxed.
From what I understand some restaurants pay out the tips that are charged not at the end of the day but at payday so they have to wait for their tips. I've asked in the past how the restaurant pays them out but I've been carrying less cash and putting it on my card lately instead. This is a good reminder of why I need to keep cash when we eat out instead of being lazy.
ETA: After reading hungrycaterpillar's story I feel better about DH's idiosyncrasies and paranoia. We deal with cash often enough but we always make sure to hand the bill and cash to the server to cash out and keep the tip. We don't leave it at the table for precisely that reason.
When I waited tables we got cash for CC same day. Where my sister currently works she gets CC tips in her paycheck. She actually likes the mix.
I always write cash on the line if I'm not adding the tip to the card. Had someone extra tip himself.
When I worked at the salon (front desk) and was trying to set up an appointment with a difficult woman, rather than telling me the times she needed like first available evening appointment, she just asked for X's first available appointment. When it was during the day, she said no, that won't do due to her work. She asked for the first available after that, a bit later in the afternoon, again a no go.
She then tells me, "No, that won't work either as I have a real job." What did she think I was doing, volunteer work? If you know you can only do weekday nights or weekends, tell me that from the start, especially when I have already asked if you have a preference. ugh
Omg. What an asshole. So is it better to leave a tip on the card when you pay with a card? I thought servers would prefer cash tips and never thought about all these other things.
