Anyone watch the Comedy Central roast of James Franco last night?
I thought Bill Hader's set was going to be lame when he came onto the stage playing a character, but it was pretty funny. I had no idea who Natasha Leggero was, but she was really funny. Jonah Hill did a lot better than I thought he would, as did Aziz Ansari (LOVED his "what's with all the gay jokes?" joke).
Andy Samberg was terrible. Everyone else was just blah. Seth Rogen was a boring host. James Franco's rebuttal at the end was just O.K. Very cute that his grandma was a good sport, especially with Jeff Ross's joke about her impending death (nice that he thanked her in the credits for being a good sport).
Bill Hader was laughing way too hard at most of the comedians, and so was Aziz Ansari ... and what was up with him just slapping his chair the whole time? It wasn't THAT funny, guy.
I thought Andy Samberg was awful, but my DH thought maybe he was doing it on purpose, like when Franco bombed the Oscars?
IDK if it was supposed to be a nod to Franco's Oscar performance, or if it was just Samberg's schtick (I read a lot of critics comparing him to, and similarly criticizing, Norm MacDonald's style), but I just don't get how anyone thought it'd actually be funny. <--- although I guess I just don't "get it," because Twitter was blowing up with people saying "OMG ANDY SAMBERG IS THE FUNNIEST PERSON ALIVE"
I kind of wonder if Samberg couldn't/didn't want to come up with any real jokes, or if he was just reluctant to say anything mean, and so instead he went with the lame fake jokes to avoid all that.
I thought it was pretty obvious that Samberg was "bombing" on purpose. Thats kind of his schtick. Purposeful awkward bumbling. Chris Farley used to do this a lot also. I thought it was pretty funny. I'm disappointed that the roasters were roasted more than Franco. I mean, Aziz barely even touched on him.
