The early reports( I know it can be sketchy ) seemed to suggest he had larger gun. How do you walk into the Navy Yard with a big ass gun?
Well, there are also (unconfirmed) reports that one shooter was in fatigues. My H works right by the Marine Barracks. A dude in fatigues with a big-ass gun would arouse approximately zero suspicion.
you basically walk right in. they check IDs but anyone can get in really. there's a great museum and a ship you can tour, we used to take school groups there all the time. i've taken my family there too.
And technically, that's not supposed to happen if they don't have DoD-issued ID. (I've done it too) Enforcement is pretty weak, which was my point to the other posters.
well i don't have a DoD ID either. you only need your license to get on base to go to the museum.
Individuals above the age of 18 are required to have a valid government-issued ID card, such as a driver's license, State ID, passport, or Common Access Card (CAC). Guests accompanied by children under the age of 18 will be responsible for those children. Large handbags and backpacks may be searched by Security.
All Visitors who do not have Military ID or government issued CAC cards are required to use the 11th & O street entrance or the Riverwalk Trail on weekdays and the 6th & M street entrance or Riverwalk Trail on weekends.
Personal vehicles are permitted on weekends ONLY. Vehicle registration and proof of insurance or rental agreement are required. During the week, parking is available for a fee in the lot adjacent to the Navy Yard at the intersection of 6th & M St SE.
It's kind of scary. My H is in the military and we went onto base on the way home from the pool the other day. When we got to the gate I realized I had zero ID. Not even my license. They still let us through. I was shocked and kinda like wtf.

I have little-to-no faith in security against true madmen. Security helps maintain an safe envoirnment, definitely. But for a motivated lunatic, well, there are always holes to be breached.
Though this stuff happens way, way too much in this country, it is still, thankfully, rare.
I love how CNN fills their story with random information like the Navy's fiscal year budget. Because that is *exactly* the information I was looking for when I clicked on that story.
Wolf Blitzer just tried to get the police officer he was interviewing to speculate on the meaning behind the clothes the shooter was wearing. "The shooter was wearing all black!! What is the significance of that?!?"

I guess rare is relative. If you come from a place were mass shootings happen once in a generation, if at all, then I would think you'd not call having mass shootings once every few weeks "rare."

CNN has really jumped the shark.
I saw that! Did you see the interview with the witness who had been in a meeting?
"We were in a business meeting when we heard three loud sounds like a table falling.. (tells a long story)"
Just another day in America, folks. Another shooting to be completely forgotten about in approximately two days. One more to add to the never-ending list.
Nothing to see here - move right along. There's football on tonight!

1200 missing in the CO floods. Nothing to see here, move right along. 3 pages on a shooting, only 2 on the flood. See what the board cares about the most?

Yes we should lobby the government to stop flooding!
from NBC Washington: "Earlier Monday morning, the one known gunman walked into Building #197 at the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters, 1336 Isaac Hull Ave. in the Southeast section of the District. He shot a security guard in the head, killing him, sources confirmed to News4's Jackie Bensen.
The gunman then walked through the building, and seemed to target victims, Bensen reported. Some reports indicate he was armed with an AR-15, a military-style assault weapon."

We actually should. It was degrading infrastructure that made the floods worse than they should have been (several old dams burst), but guns are more sexy to lobby about.

I'm waiting to see if the shooter(s) are civilians or military personnel. If they're military, then gun restrictions for the average Joe is kind of a moot point in this particular case. Military personnel are pretty much always going to have access to weapons on base as part of their job, regardless of gun restrictions for civilians.
I seriously cannot believe we are playing which cause gets more lobbying.
We're not. It was just my response to the hyperbolic comments threads like this receive.
Yah, but in this thread when a shooter is still loose is not the time or place. And the hyperbolic comment is a running theme in most shooting posts on this board, so it seems even weirder.

And it didn't even make sense because my comment was about American society at large and our fake outrage and distress when these shootings happen when we are utterly unwilling to do *anything* to attempt to prevent them. So they keep happening and each time we're "oh my god! How shocking and terrible!" And then forget all about it until the next one.
But maybe I'm just being hyperbolic and none of this actually happens at all - I've just totally made it up out of nowhere and it has no basis in reality.

Woah! are 1200 people really missing? I've heard nothing of this
