Watching the flashbacks was interesting and really, really sad. I desperately want R & D to be together, but I don't know if it's ever going to happen now.

i think the fact that based on the this season previews they both lose their music (which has always been a metaphor for them) I imagine they'll spend a decent part of the season seperate and working on healing from the shit that's gone down and then start ciecling eachother again.

I love Deacon so much! And I do want him with Rayna, but it's going to take some time - hiding the fact that he's the father for so many years, years when he was not drinking, isn't something that should be forgiven anytime soon!

the guy turned back to drinking when things got hard after what 12 yrs sobriety? How would he have handled the realities of a newborn? there is no way he was in any condition to be a father when Maddie was born and he was barely sober, Rayna had to make some hard decisions and she did what a good parent does and chose what was best for her child, a stable happy life. I am generally against keeping things like genetic parentage from a kid but in theses circumstances it was in Maddie's best interest that Deacon not be an active part of her life. You saw what he was like in the flashbacks. and once she made that agreement with Teddy there was no going back, he was Maddie's dad. Legally even if they told Deacon there would've been nothing he could do since TN is a presumptive paternity state so the husband is the legal father and it can only be contested by the husband or wife and not by third parties. So do you really think he would've handled that information well at any point when he could never legally be her father?
ETA: I'm a bit biased as I grew up seeing the damage a parent with addiction issues can do and how it hurt my cousin my parents raised and how it affects her to this day.

What? Really? 12 yrs is a long ass haul. He will get sober again. That wasn't the only issue that caused him to drink he had a ton of shit going on. It's not like it was an ongoing thing he had ONE bad night. Who says he couldn't handle an newborn. He went to rehab, came out and found Rayna married to someone else. Who does that?!
ETA: Wow that ways harsher than I meant. I'm sorry its a TV show but I think he is being unfairly bashed.
We will never know how Deacon would have handled a newborn because Rayna never gave him that choice.
Perhaps he would have continued to drink but we know that shortly after they split up, he went to rehab, got sober, and stayed that way for twelve years.
He could have just as easily viewed Maddie's birth as the impetus to get sober and stay that way and he and Rayna could have been together as a family for all of those years.
Again, we will never know and though I understand Rayna hiding the truth from him, she had no right to do so.
I seriously hope TPTB are planning to have Deacon and Rayna move past this and find their way back to each other - the previews with her fooling around with Liam - ew! - hate him and his stupid hipster hat.
And I hate that Teddy is taking advantage of the situation to get back into Rayna's life. He's an ass who deserves everything crazy-pants Peggy is going to give him.
Scarlett didn't grate for once and I'm glad she was smart enough not to say "yes" to Gunnar's proposal. I still want the two of them together and Avery with Juliette.
