OK, f/u to my previous question. If you're PCSing, have 2 kids, presumably a lot of years of experience moving (don't know the rank but I think at least major), why would you show up without a reservation at TLF or a hotel???
Oh, and you want to stay for enough days that it will encompass 4th of July holidays. Plus you want a kitchenette at minimum. In a tourist area primarily full of hotel rooms, not suites, except for insanely expensive ones, and not much long term lodging b/c they want tourists to pay hotel rates.
I'm really hoping there's a story behind this, like they found out in the air that lodging had lost the reservation. Or that someone else had promised to do it and dropped the ball (but, still, wouldn't you confirm?)

*shrug* Maybe they've always winged it in the past and never had a problem. We made reservations this time but only because we knew we wouldn't have a place to live for a little while and didn't want to worry about finding a pet friendly hotel that was within commuting distance of base.

Wow. Someone screwed up. And, PCSing to an island is different that PCSing CONUS. I can't imagine showing up and expecting there to be room for us. I hope it all works out for them.
We've winged it on each move so far. But, we have no kids or pets to make it harder to find a place to stay, and aren't completely set on having a room with a kitchenette. That would be nice, but not critical, although I do like getting at least a fridge and microwave if I can...
All of our moves have been CONUS, too. OCONUS would involve more preparation.

Agree. Because we have animals I usually just make sure that I know if there are pet friendly hotels in the area. I agree that a fridge/micro is nice but usually if I have somewhere to sleep and shower I'm fine.
And yes, being on a island would make me want to plan better too.

Not me! With this herd we always secure lodging. You can't just assume something will be available for you.
