I really liked this episode. there were a lot of throwbacks to past seasons, so I felt that like that was a little gift to fans.
My favorites: The pizza place making a comeback (where was TANTRUM!) the fact that Ted was so consumed with the damn thank you note that he didn't notice the Slutty Pumpkin at that halloween party Lily dressed up as the kid from Juno----awesome Post-honeymoon Barney (OMG)
sidenote - since Lilly was in the bar when Barney came back from the honeymoon, that basically revealed that they didn't go to Rome, right?

OMG we thought it was awful. Really, Robin winning Barney's mom's shirt? And Barney going all ballistic on his brother and mom? It's not even believable anymore. Please put this show out of its misery.
I did love the slutty pumpkin sighting though. And Barney's hair all done in dreads from Belize. lolololol

I am really hating the concept for this season. Dragging the wedding weekend out along the whole season is just so boring. I'm sick of Marshall on the road trip. Too many things in this episode were just over the top ridiculous - especially Barney with his family.

Did Marshall film this entire season in ONE sitting? He is awful this season. I know he didn't want to sign on for another season, but damn Jason, at least do your character some justice to save face for the past 8 years. Thank goodness for the flashbacks. And Lily looks awful. Hair and makeup needs to step it up. I'm ready for more Mom sightings at this point.
This sounds awful, but why does Lily have like... jowls now? Like her face just looks rougher than it used to.
I agree. I know it's really snarky to comment on someone's appearance, but I find myself saying, "Geez, Lily looks really old" in every episode. She's a really pretty person so I wonder if the makeup is just not flattering for her?
She's also playing a much younger character, though. Alyson Hannigan's almost 40 in real life, and so are Neil Patrick Harris and Josh Radnor (Barney and Ted). Meanwhile, Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders (Marshall and Robin) are in their early 30s. I think all their characters are supposed to be about 35 or younger.
And whoever has been dressing Lily and Robin these past couple of seasons has been doing a terrible job. They're both very lovely women and they looked much cuter in the first few seasons ... they've had Robin in all these weird unflattering blouses and blazers lately, and Lily used to wear cute dresses more often. They've also given them really terrible haircuts and colors ... Lily's gone back and forth between bright redhead and goth-style dark hair with bangs, and Robin used to have long silky hair but now they have her in some kind of shaggy cut. They're making these lovely women look like sad sacks.

I used that exact word to DH the other day. She just looks awful. I don't like being mean about her appearance because I do like Alyson Hannigan, but damn. Aging isn't being good to her. She also looks as pale as a ghost, which a better makeup job could fix.

I need to start paying better attention. I missed the slutty pumpkin and post-honeymoon Barney. I am going to have to re-watch.
RE: Lily, I wish they would stop having her make this face:
She does it all the time (minus the eyes) and it makes her look awful. Plus, it's annoying.
The major episodes each season (premiere, finale, sweeps) are still pretty decent, but the filler episodes have been terrible. The creators usually write the major episodes and then the other writers are in charge of the filler. And I read somewhere that a lot of the writing staff hasn't been around since the beginning, so that's why the filler episodes feel really disjointed from earlier seasons and are missing a lot of continuity with the little details.
I read the tag line for tonight's episode on Wikipedia, and I'm anticipating a truly awful plot.
omg you guys, it keeps getting worse. 10/21 episode just as bad. *head to desk*
You know, I thought a lot of the individual little jokes were pretty funny, but the overall plotline was just stupid.
I liked the Indiana Jones knight following Ted around and telling him how he chose poorly. I really thought they were building up to a scene with him and The Mother at the end, where the knight would tell him that he chose wisely, but oh well. And the scene in the cave with Ted exploding and Barney playing guitar with the 1950s beach girls was funny.
I didn't mind the storyline about Robin and Barney with the reverend, and I thought it went over pretty well, but having him die at the end was dumb. I guess they're setting us up for Marshall to conduct the ceremony (since he's now magically a judge), or for Ted to get ordained online and perform the ceremony, right?
I liked Daphne and Marshall rehearsing what he'd say to Lily. But I don't get why she had to be an ass and text Lily about the judge position at the end of the episode ... really, what was her excuse for that other than being a bitch? I know that she and Marshall were squabbling, but WTF was she supposedly so mad about?
I really, really don't know how they're going to salvage Ted's character in order to make him worthy of this magical Mother woman. Really - he's STILL hung up on Robin, he was willing to plow a complete stranger until she got too boring and depressing for him (although him making the faces and banging his fist on the table/bed was funny), and then he tried to ditch her for two other women - one of whom already had a date. He's just a gigantic sleazy hornball at this point - he's no better than pre-engagement Barney.
And, really, he's got some balls to be annoyed with Cassie talking too long, considering he's been torturing his poor children for eight freaking years - especially since the story is essentially, "Here's a list of everyone I slept with before I settled for your mother."

I really feel like this entire season so far has been one big filler episode. I agree with you mbcdefg on how are they going to get Ted's character in line to fall for the mother.

All I can say is that any time I see Edward Herrmann, I'm happy. Even when he's underused and the episode sucks, I'm a happy girl. - signed, still a Gilmore Girls fan. :-)

Agree that overall it was bad, as are all of the episodes these days, but some small stuff was funny, and that was one of them. I also lol'ed at Lily speaking in Sherri Shepherd's voice and "What the damn hell?!?"
I'm so over this show, but I can't keep myself from finishing it out.
This is us as well. We actually skipped most of last season because it was so bad. We're only back this season bc it's the last, and we meet the mother, but omg, it's hard to get through.

MH works late on Monday nights, so I DVR the episode and we watch it together when he gets home. Which, IMO, is the way to do it, because sitting through the commercials on top of all the show-related nonsense would be unbearable.
I seriously thought about just DVRing every episode up until Christmas and then watching them all in one shot, rather than waiting week-to-week. And then do it again for the spring.

They aren't. They are going to have Ted say some schmaltzy thing and then pretend like he's been super awesome this whole time, like his imagined speech to the mother at her apartment last year. It was supposed to be so heart warming and awesome but this was pretty much my fact the whole time
