I waited until DD was born to buy them; we were pretty set on two and done. I used cheap ones in the meantime and figured DS was young enough not to care. However, I ended up getting PBK stockings, which are still sold, so I could've bought 3, then added when the time came. I just wasn't ready to commit yet.
When I was pregnant with DD1, we bought 5 stockings at Cracker Barrel because I thought they were super cute. We had one for each of us and one for each of our dogs, and one for DD1 in utero. Now, we only have 1 dog so we will each have one. If we have baby #3, dog will get his own 'different' stocking.
We waited until we were done. We actually had a few stockings that we'd been given by family so we used those until DD was born. Then I bought a matching set.

They still sell the ones I bought for us thankfully (2 years in between kids)! If not, I probably would have gotten new ones. Ours all match and have our names on them (including the dog's!)
My great grandmother made everyone in our family matching stockings, and now my aunt continues that tradition for the younger generations using the same pattern.

I had to laugh, because I went through this last year, with W. We knew we wanted another. I'm going to wait and buy us all matching stockings once this LO arrives. For now he's using my childhood stocking.
I bought 2 for DH and I from Lands End 7 years ago. Then when we got Sadie, Lands End had the same stocking, just slightly different and with some different scenes. That was 5 years ago. I just ordered E's stocking from Lands End and they had the same ones, just different scenes.
You could always buy X number of plain ones and get them embroidered locally. My SIL bought 7 red stockings and then bought initial pins for all of them.

We have Lands' End needlepoint stockings. Mine I purchased for myself years ago and DH, DD, and DS each got one when they joined my family. The stocking shape/size is slightly different between the years, so I try not to look too closely at them. If you're not Type A, it probably wouldn't bug you at all.

I saw some stockings that I loved in a store the year before I got pregnant with DD2. We were TTC at the time so I went ahead and bought an extra. We knew we were done after 2 so I'm glad I did that at the time since they all match now.
I know not everyone would want to buy ahead like I did but I think picking a brand that's been around for a long time or sticking with a theme is a great idea.
This has actually been on my mind too. I have stockings I ordered last year for me, DH, and DS. I was thinking of looking to see if I could order the same ones for the twins now but then I remembered they have our names on them and we aren't finding out ahead of time what we are having let alone their names! I suppose if they don't have them next year I will just start over. Maybe I'll just get new ones for all the kids and DH and I will keep ours.

I have been wondering the same thing! I almost bought 4 but What if we have trouble getting pg with #2 or we have twins or something!? I think I will hold off on getting nice ones until we are done with kids. But the neurotic side of me really wants matching ones now...
My great grandmother made everyone in our family matching stockings, and now my aunt continues that tradition for the younger generations using the same pattern.
My paternal grandmother made stockings for all of us that matched the ones that she made for their family (my dad, his sister and my grandparents). They were all handmade, quilted with our names stiched at the top. My mom didn't carry on the tradition, she didn't have the quilting/sewing skills of my grandmother, but I still have mine and treasure it.
I never knew people did matching stockings! Growing up, we all had unique stockings that somewhat reflected our own interests and personalities. Now, we have homemade knit stockings from MIL.

I made our stockings and am hoarding matching fabric to make more if needed, but will probably buy matching embroidered stockings in the distant future. I love them, but I realize I may want to replace them since they're not very classic. This is the pattern -

Growing up I had a matching stocking with my sister. But they were different than my parents, and then later different than my step-dad's and step-siblings. So it was always kinda a mix.
I had matching cheap stockings for DH and I. Then after DS1 was born my mom made him a stocking and then made matching ones for DH and I as well. And she made one for DS2 also.
When I was a baby my mom made me a stocking. She embroidered it. I had a small one my first Xmas and a larger one for the next Christmas. I got it in my silly head that I have to make baby r one. So I have just started. I am about 10 hours into it. I am also making DH one because he doesn't have a handmade stocking either. Assuming I ever finish these I will also make the next baby one. The one that says Sarah is what dd is getting. You can see that I have only made a small dent. It's a good stress reliever though and a mindless activity for at night watching tv.
I went with PBK for DH and my stocking and we will add on as we have kids. I hope the pattern of the stocking is the same, just with different styles. If not, I'll probably re-buy new stockings when we are done having kids. I like coordinating things. The picture can be different, like a snowman, an angel, train, etc.
My mom bought my pottery barn stocking... 10+ years ago and they still have it. It is red with a green fold. Pretty safe bet they will have them for hypothetical kids in the future.
I think this year when they go on sale I will be buying 5 stockings from pottery barn. This way we have one for H & I, M and dd#2 thats due around christmas, then we will also have one extra for hopeful baby #3.
Honestly for some reason I have more anxiety over having stocking holders that match. We have gotten lucky at Target having somewhat similar style ones each year but I don't know how long that will last so I might try and find a matching set of those this year as well.
I live in constant fear that PB will discontinue the pattern I have for DH, myself, DD1 and DD1, before I have a DC3. Here's hoping they still have it in 2015!
Years ago I bought matching monogrammed stockings for DH, DS1, me, and the dog, plus three extra stockings for future babies and/or dogs. Two of those have since been monogrammed for DS2 and DS3. Barring a very unexpected IUD failure, remainder will, I suppose, eventually get used for future pet.
I found the stockings at the Pottery Barn outlet super cheap, so this was more MM than it sounds.

We bought extra. Unfortunately, I couldn't find an embroiderer with the same font, so I ended up ordering an embroidered one when DS2 was born. I also bought the kids ones to match ours for when they are older. I like stockings . I guess any future pets can have the plain ones. I have since located a local embroiderer who has the fonts I need.

I just bought one for dd from pbk. I assume they will still carry the same styles in a couple years. I'm sure if not then it will be similiar which is good enough for me. I wouldn't buy one now because I want it personalized with the name.

We had a 1st Christmas for Joey 2 years ago, a basic stocking that said J that I got for $5 at Kohls for last year and now I've ordered nice matching stockings for the three of us and Lily.
I bought extra last year. We decided on simple cable knit stockings for now, not personalized ones. So I bought 4 of them since we plan to have 2 kids, and then the pugs have their own special stockings.
MIL quilts personalized stockings for all the grandkids but they stay at her house :\
