Super late on this but I'm on the NHS and everything is free. A couple years ago prescriptions went from £3 to totally free. I pay something for dental visits, eye checks are free but glasses/contacts aren't - they seem to be comparable to what I used to pay in the states.
I was in the hospital last year and have had 10 ultrasounds in the past year and endless doctor's visits and haven't paid a penny. I do understand I'm taxed for it, but DH and I ran the numbers and we take home a better percentage of our salary now than when we had to pay for insurance in the states. I'm a huge, huge, huge fan of the NHS.
We definitely have a public health care system here, and while I have not used it (not eligible for it), my students complain about it a lot. Long waits, poor quality services/care, a general sense of apathy from basically everyone, etc.
The only medical care I've received in-country has been prenatal care, and we just pay out of pocket for everything, cross our fingers, and submit it to our US insurance company in the hopes that they will reimburse us for something. For a visit including blood work, I pay about $250 US.
