I don't really have a policy. We usually aren't home during prime trick-or-treat time so we leave candy out. We normally come home to a rather full container because our street is low volume for trick-or-treaters (right off of a busy street.) I give out handfulls to any kid that comes just to get rid of it.
Our neighborhood gets absolutely slammed most years, so unless I want to buy a shitton of candy to last the 2 hours we're open for business I only give one piece per kid. Then I save the gross kinds for the teenagers who show up sans costume.
Man, you give those little teenager fuckers candy? I've closed my door on them before. Candy is expensive. I'm not giving a high school senior a handful of anything.
I'm so glad to hear that someone does this for kids in the neighborhood. Our neighbors growing up made my brothers and I little bags for Halloween with cookies, candy, spider rings, plastic mazes, etc. We always went to their house first to show them our costumes and get our treat bags. Some of my favorite memories. They've since passed away, and I still think about how happy that little gesture made me.
this is what I like about it. They're all nice kids, this is a working class neighborhood, and they all have a hard enough time of things. Some nice old lady down the street makes a fuss over them once a year, they remember and it's a good feeling for them; and it costs me 20 dollars, maybe, tops.
We get about 200 kids (perhaps more since more families move in every year). Our interlopers come down from the multimillion dollar houses on the hills where it is difficult to trick or treat (distance between houses and steep, long driveways). So it's the opposite of Sue's partner. lol. We usually get pixy stix, swedish fish, goldfish and clementines. Toddlers get goldfish and clementines (as do teens - and they love it). Two pixy stix each for the preschool to middle school set. Swedish fish go out last since I'm okay with leftovers.

DH does the treat bags for everyone. ~10 pieces per bag. I think it would be cheaper to hand out full sized bars. But it would ruin part of DHs fun prepping for Halloween.
THIS IS MY FIRST TIME TO HAVE TRICK-OR-TREATERS!!!! I'm really excited I don't know how many to expect but I'll let them take a handful if they want. Speaking of which, I need to buy more candy.
I remember as a kid the lady on the corner let everyone take a handful and every year, I was like "OMG, a WHOLE HANDFUL OF CANDY!!!!" And I always said I'd do the same.
Luckily, we only get 20-30 tot'ers. I love giving out candy. I turn my porch light on at like 4:00 and start looking up and down the street for kids, lol.
We do 2 pieces until the last 30 minutes or so, then it is handfuls. The amount of TOTers we get varied according to the weather. Some years it can only be 50, some years over 100.
When we have bad weather it usually means the littles don't come out. This upsets our dog Willow who loves Holloween since she thinks all littles ringing the doorbell are coming to see her and this apparently is the best thing ever. It is so sweet how she gets all wiggly and puts her head down to get petted when she sees a toddler. She doesn't give a crap about the middle and high schoolers. Cracks me up every single year.
But if you are an older TOTer and you tell me how sweet my dogs are...more candy for you!!

The past couple of years it's been 2 pieces, but this year I think it'll be 1, because we always get a ton of kids and then run out, and I don't feel like spending $50 on candy.
H and I always buy TONS of candy so I give out several pieces and though H gives me the side-eye, I hand out to EVERYONE - including teenagers and parents asking for candy for "the baby." Whether in a costume or not.
Halloween should be about two things - candy and fun. Period.
Our neighborhood gets absolutely slammed most years, so unless I want to buy a shitton of candy to last the 2 hours we're open for business I only give one piece per kid. Then I save the gross kinds for the teenagers who show up sans costume.
One year when the youngest was a teen, he handed out candy. When other teens came trick or treating without costumes, he would say "Dude, no costume! Almond Joy for you!" We thought it was hysterical.
We only get 5-10 ToTers every year. I give each kid a very large handful. Whatever candy I have left over I give to the teens in my class the next day.
I generally give out two pieces per person- one fun size chocolate bar and one fruity type. Last year was our first year to take DS ToTing, so my parents came to our house to pass out candy while we're gone. They live in the country so they've never been able to pass out candy before. Strangely, we had fewer kids and went through more candy last year, lol. Whatever, they had fun plus I think my mom opened a bottle of wine so maybe her counting skills were off.
A couple of pieces, but it depends on the number of ToT'ers - in the past we've had very few, and if this year we look around and there are still very few, we'll probably be more liberal with whatever we're handing out.
