I didn't say it suspends their suffering. It is obviously for my own piece of mind. And of course, I can't give them party hats, USDA would have a heart attack. I can't change what happens to them, there are strict rules on what I can and cannot give them. They are animals, they enjoy an extra snack here and there.
I think it is hypocritical to call animal research an egregious mistake if you have ever taken any sort of medication, had any sort of medical problem that was treated or even if you donate to any fund saying they are finding a way to cure cancer. How else do you think they find these cures? Its from the thousands of mice we take care of every day. I don't always like what they do to my animals, it is especially hard with the dogs and non human primates, but until they let us do this to people, I can't see another way.
Chill out and stop echoing my words; I wasn't talking to you.
Although it sounds like you might have a fair bit of defensive guilt going on.
I do have guilt. It wasn't a field I wanted to get into, and its a hard field to get out of. I LOVE working with non human primates but it kills me to see them in cages every day, which is why I make it a point to put so much effort into enrichment and training. I stress this hard on my staff too. Heck, I even adopted one of the research beagles and made sure each had a great home when we did our last adoption because they deserve a great home. Despite the fact that the dog is 2.5 years old and was never house trained and neutered when I brought him home, I remind myself that he was not raised like a normal dog and I can't blame him for his issues. He is weird to say the least.

Oh and I also didn't read it right, I do get defensive because I get a lot of crap from people in real life when they ask what I do. Now I just say "I take care of animals" because people don't want to know the truth.
It was part of a larger conversation about activism, etc. Then someone challenged you about what you would do if women lost the right to vote. I'll give you this- you held firm on your stance about accepting decisions made by the majority.

It was funny and everyone laughed at you.
Ohhhhh I get it now.
Well yeah, I wouldn't start a civil war or anything. I might leave though.
Well, the dog that I have from the lab was used for a sterilization project. Basically, he has the best life a dog could ask for in a lab lol. He was used for semen collections once a week, had non stop play time with other dogs and daily obedience training. The only other dogs we have had were used for developing a method for regenerating a pancreas to cure diabetes in dogs

Isn't the point of the documentary to make people aware of it so public opinion will turn against it? I would assume that's step one in fixing the problem.
However, I personally think keeping captive bred animals for zoos etc. is sort of a middle ground. Harvesting the animals from the wild in the first place was wrong, but now we've got them several generations deep, and using them for education regarding conservation etc. doesn't seem bad to me.
I agree with the bolded statement. The captive bred animals can't be returned to the wild, so, what else is there to do with them? I work in laboratory animal research and even within myself I find I have mixed feelings about my work. One one hand, I am animal lover and I am proud to say I love and care for each one of my animals at work, I name them, I train them, I give them special treats on holidays and birthdays, I mourn them when they are gone. I hate what has to be done to them though. I hate that some of them come from the wild. I had a serious medical condition as a child and I owe it to research animals that I am here and who I am today.
That was a bit of a tangent, but yeah, wild caught for entertainment is terrible for their mental heath.
You do animal research? What kind of research? I am withholding the judgment I'm feeling right now until I have more information.
Was anyone else bothered by the amount of commercials cnn had during the show? I was watching on xfinity cnn live tv so my commercial experience could have been different than the regular cnn viewing. The frequency of commercials really stunk. I thought it was an awesome documentary. It breaks your heart that these animals are living like this when they are such intelligent and social creatures. So disturbing.
Much of research on cardiopulmonary bypass was performed on dogs and pigs because they have similar circulations and physiologic/immunologic responses to stress. There are lots of research projects performed for these reasons
Where I work they are only used for work for dog related issues. We do have pigs that are used for human applications because of the similarity to humans. We have what is called the three R's "Replacement, refinement and reduction", basically, do we need to use this certain species (why use non human primates or dogs when it can be just as effective in mice or rats) or even use a living animal model at all, is this the best and least painful method to do a certain project and what is the least number of animals needed for the study to be statistically significant. No one wants to use an animal if they don't have to, but sometimes there is no other way.

I don't donate to a cancer organization, but I do donate to a group called the Beagle Freedom Project who works to keep lab dogs from being euthanized. I've seen first-hand the kind of damage done to animals who are the focus of various lab testing. I'm having a really hard time right now not telling you to go fuck yourself, just so you know.
There has never been a subject on this board that has made me feel so much rage. I am literally shaking. Fuck.

I did research as a graduate student, but it was on swine genetics and involved hair samples and no animals died as a result :-) I do not do research now, my job is making sure the animals are as happy and healthy as possible and making sure everyone follows the rules set forth by all the governing agencies.
If the picture worked, you can see this beagle we brought home is living a very unhappy life... lol

I am glad you do donate to this organization. I feel that all research animals who can be adopted out SHOULD be. In fact, at my current place of employment I designed and implemented their adoption program so our dogs DO get adopted. I have one (I just posted his picture). Dogs are a very regulated species in research labs. They have very high standards for their care and everyone who works at these places is an animal lover. We all have our own pets, the vet staff became vets because they love animals and we do everything we possibly can to make their lives the best we can.

Thank you for clarifying that. There are not a lot of things I am passionate about, but animal testing (especially unnecessary testing done for shampoos and the like) is one. I strongly believe we need to find a new way to test medications and medical procedures without the use of live subjects, canine or otherwise. I can appreciate that you are making an effort to help regulate things and make sure labs are following the proper practices.

Your pup and kid are just adorable.
Can we still use E. coli? Or is that cool because it isn't cute?

I am very against that type of research. I only condone medical research because there just isn't another way right now. Advances in science are working towards making that a possibility though and in the mean time I will do my part to make sure the animals are respected for the gift they give. When this last round of dogs was up for adoption my husband was well aware that I would take home EVERY dog that did not find a home.
What amount of donation to the Beagle Freedom Project affords the right to tell anyone in animal research to go fuck themselves? Lol. I'm thinking that's at least a platinum-level perk.

Oh No!! In that case I lied to you all in my previous post. I did in fact work with yeast and E. coli in the lab as an undergrad.
Sigh....it's all in a days work. And my husband wonders why I don't tell people what I do... I would love to tell people about the times where one of my monkeys throws his vitamins back at me, or how a dog was so enamored with me during semen collections I had to bring in a towel on my maternity leave that smelled like me so he would still collect. Animals can be so quirky. those e. Coli's on the other hand...
zzuvet, I am sorry for saying what I did. It was not ok and was downright rude. I appreciate you explaining what your work entails and your personal feelings on the subject.

Apology accepted...it is a touchy subject, definitely one where a lot of emotion is involved. I hope you continue to support your organization, because these dogs really are great, but need special care. Mine is weird for sure. I am always open to talking to people about my work when asked because so many things have changed in recent years and not a lot of people get to see things happening on the inside.
Just remember, we really do love these animals. They have names, we all mourn their loss but we must respect and appreciate their sacrifice.

If that's not something to put on your resume I'm not really sure what is.

Most of my work experience is in an animal science, you should see the things on my resume. Castrating animals, milking sheep, pulling calves/lambs/kids that get stuck during birth...artificially inseminating pigs. My family stopped asking what I did at work that day when I was in undergrad.
