He was Good Will Hunting brilliant, only instead of being discovered as the janitor, he was the convicted armed robber at a federal penitentiary. A math professor from a nearby university would come by to work with him.
My best friend from hs. He's astoundingly smart and insightful as hell.
Barely graduated high school, hacked into the school's computer system and changed his grades. Went straight from school to working at Red Hat and now is some IT big wig out in California.

I think it also depends on how you define smart - is it book smart? Is it being smart about handling world issues? I know so many super smart people who are smart in different ways.

The old friend/former coworker I posted about earlier, who recently died. The man was smart and articulate. He worked as a Law Clerk for a judge. I always loved reading his posts on Facebook about different political and legal stuff because he was so good at debate.

This is a really good point. The guy I was with in Seattle was a genius and in MENSA and all that (lol) but I think of FIL as being smarter only because he knows so much about so many things. H is the same way. H isn't a genius but fuck he's smart and knows so much about a lot of things. I want him to pass that on to David like his father passed that on to him.
They are all doctors... My great uncle, high up in the army a while ago, came up with cardiac catheterizations. My best friends sister in high school, perfect score on her ACT and is now an oncologist at Vanderbilt. One of the doctors I work with, a little awkward socially but ex AF pilot and now an ob/gyn. He knows everything, seriously.

I define it by how they process, not what they know. Watching an incredibly smart person think is just beautiful.
A few of the doctors I work with. Most are so easy going, and easy to talk to. When I see them in action, I'm in awe. Their brilliance amazes me. I would trust my life to them.
My dad. He's a physicist, invented things, taught himself other languages for fun, and is hilarious when he's not all geeked out obsessive over something.

It depends what we are talking about.
Mechanically? My dad. He can engineer anything macguyver style. Life skills? My mom. Overall academic genius? A good friend from high school who is not only an amazingly gifted mathematician/physicist/musician, but is also hilarious and kind hearted.
