We saw it last night and it....wasn't exactly a letdown, but I JUST reread the book so all I could do was compare, and of course there were a lot of little differences. I didn't feel the movie did a particularly good or bad job of adapting the story from the book, but....I mean, as you would expect, the book was better.
I've very excited to see this one but I haven't read the book yet. I actually have it checked out right now but I think I'm going to return it for now. I'm really starting to hate when I compare movies to books and generally I'll like the movie better this way. Another reason I'm holding off on rereading Catching Fire haha.
Good idea! I think the movie was good on its own, it was all the comparing that made it less enjoyable...but definitely read the book sometime later, too.

I haven't read the book in years, I think that always helps when seeing new movie adaptations. Looking forward to this one, it is my favorite sci-fi book hands down.
I have never read the book and had no expectations for the movie. I thought it was really good as did DH. They could have done a better job with character development on secondary characters, but the kid who played Ender is really talented (he was great in Hugo too) and made his character believable. :Y:
I thought it was actually a very good adaptation. Probably one of my favorites next to Hunger Games. It really stuck to the story line, even some of the dialog was exactly the same. The battle room in particular was pretty awesome.
I knew this movie was going to give me a lot of feels, the book upset me a lot, but man, the movie was a like a punch to the gut. Even when you know what is going to happen and how this little boy is basically torn apart at the mercy of people supposed to be mentoring him it still hurts. I dont know what it is about this story, but it really personally hurt me for some reason. I'm too much of a softy.
Should I read the book before watching the movie? I pretty much know the story and have read some spoilers.
If I learned one thing from Harry Potter, movies are infinitely more enjoyable if you don't read the book right before you see the movie. A few months in advance, sure. But if you read it right before you'll always end up disappointed somehow.
I haven't read Ender's Shadow yet. How spoilerish is the film on that front?
I'm on the fence, because I'd like to see it in the theater, even though I think it's going to suck (because how can you make the best parts of Ender's Game into a film?) but I reeeeeally don't want to spoil Ender's Shadow since so many of my friends say it's even better than Ender's Game.
I don't think the movie spoils Ender's shadow at all (I mean assuming you already read ender's game, heh).
And yeah it's pretty much the only other book in the series worth reading, IMO.
It hurts us!
I loved Speaker for the Dead. But everyone told me it sucked. I think I'm just weird, because I also loved the last part of Ender's Game, which OSC wrote later precisely as a foreword for Speaker for the Dead.
