We'd love to go to Key West or another Florida Key this fall or winter because it seems like it would be a good family trip with DS who is currently 13 months old. Please recommend your favorite places to stay, things to do, and places to eat in Key West - or let us in on anything you think we need to know!
Details: We'll probably fly from Detroit to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and drive down through the Keys Budget is TBD, but no huge restrictions Need family-friendly suggestions as we will have an 18-22 month old with us
Garbo's Grill is an awesome food truck. We also loved Blue Heaven for breakfast. Check out both on trip advisor.
We stayed at Parrot Key resort/hotel which is in the "modern" part of key west. We loved our room and the grounds. The only thing that could have made it better was if it was closer to downtown KW.
I love KW... I love it alone, I love it w/ my H, I love w/ my BFFs, I love it on vacation, I love it on work-travel. In short, I'm a fan. That said, while there are certainly some cool family activities (glass bottom boat, sight seeing at Ft Z.Taylor, the Little White House, Hemmingway's House, etc), the scene really is largely a party town. I say this not to discourage you, but only to suggest maybe looking to stay in one of the quieter Keys and do a day trip down? Personally, with a toddler, I'd find a quieter town more relaxing, I think.
I really liked Old Town Mexican Cafe on Duval street. Their outdoor seating area is removed from the main road and pretty private. The food was decent for lunch. We really enjoyed the place.
I have been to KW about a half a dozen times and had my wedding down there last summer. LOVE it! For hotel we always stay at Ocean Key Resort at 0 Duval, it is amazing! Great location, amazing rooms and restaurant, fabulous service. Highly recommended!
Blue Heaven, Finnegan's Wake, Banana Cafe for breakfast, Roof Top Cafe, and BO's Fish Wagon (believe me) are some of my favorite restaurants.
Some things that my young cousins did while there for the wedding that they enjoyed was the butterfly museum, trolly tours, the sunset activites in mallory square, and also going to the beach at Fort Zachary. Though swimming at that young of an age would be tough at KW beaches, be sure to pick a hotel with a nice pool if your kids like to swim:)
