I didn't hate it! I thought I would since it was a flashback episode and it does burn me that we're still focusing on the Ted loves Robin bullshit BUT I ended up liking it.

Yeah, I like this one and I felt this one actually contributed to the story line by giving us some of the context of Barney writing "The Robin." Is Allison Hannigan looking a little skinnier, too?
I thought this was the best episode in a LONG time. I hate hate hate the whole season being the wedding weekend so I enjoyed the flashback and actually laughed a few times

It wasn't my favorite episode, but definitely better than it has been. I like that we got the flashback and a little more insight on the mother. But really they're beating the horse dead ten times over with the whole Ted/Robin thing.
I guess I was always operating on the assumption that the mother was actually at the wedding (I know they met at the train station but the way the story has been told, I thought he first saw her at the wedding). But now I'm wondering if she wasn't, since Barney would have presumably recognized her (unless he didn't meet the band, or whatever reason she would be at the wedding).
The Mother is the bass player in the band that performs at the reception (and Ted hired the band because they were recommended by Cindy, a girl from Columbia he dated once and who was The Mother's old roommate). There was an episode last season where Ted was at the wedding sadly watching Robin dance with her father, and then they showed him looking at the bass player and smiling.
They've said that he first meets her on the train platform. If Lily and Barney have already met her, and Marshall and Robin likely will as well, then I don't know how Ted doesn't meet her at the reception. Because if they've all met her and like her, I would think that they'd want to introduce her to Ted. Or that they'd see her at the reception and say, "Hey, I met you on the train/at the pharmacy! I didn't know you'd be in the band tonight!" and then Ted would happen to be there and see it.
So I wonder if Ted is going to be MIA for much of the reception. Maybe because he's still moping over losing Robin and just keeps going off by himself?
I don't like that last night's episode had her as some all-knowing being who magically guessed exactly what was wrong with Barney. I like that she offered him some good advice but I wish they hadn't been so heavy-handed with it.

I thought she was the bass player, but I was starting to second-guess if that was a fact or something I made up. But yeah, it's weird he wouldn't have met her at the actual wedding.
I agree, her magically guessing was a little over-the-top. DH was groaning loudly at that, hah.
I wonder if he'll be tied down by the blonde chick at the reception, or trying to avoid her, or just has no interest in paying attention to the band, which would be odd considering he hired them. I hope we get some episodes toward the end that give us lots of Ted/Mother interaction and piece some flashbacks together about their paths crossing, etc.
And ditto, finally get to see Marshall outside of that horrid car! Awful scenes.

This episode was so much better than the last few. It was so nice not to have the Marshall in the car scenes. It felt more like the old show. And glad we got to see a little bit of the mother.

I agree with all of this. I didn't love it, but it didn't make me want to throw my DVR either.

I had no idea who the blond girl was until I read online that she's from the show True Blood. To my knowledge, she isn't signed on for any more episodes, which makes me glad because that storyline was going nowhere. Although I thought Ted carrying her up to the lighthouse was funny, and I liked his reactions to her terrible stories.
The band was hired only about a week before the wedding because the original DJ canceled, so it's possible that he (or Barney and Robin) booked them without meeting them.
I read last night that the 200th episode is called "How Your Mother Met Me," and it's going to feature the Mother's best friend giving a toast at her birthday party. I imagine that they'll save her and Ted's first meeting until the series finale, so maybe that episode will be her backstory.
And I'll be glad to see Marshall finally make it to the wedding and not have to deal with the stupid road trip anymore.

OMG, the part that DID make me want to throw my DVR was at the first act break when Marshall said, "Robin told me she's still in love with you." And then they came back from commercial and Ted said, "Really???" and Marshall said, "No. I made that up to see what your reaction would be."

Good points. After watching for do long, I've forgotten the details that matter.

Blondie is Anna Vancamp from Pitch Perfect
It's really tough not to get mad at this show, because I keep forgetting that we know things that Ted doesn't know. He doesn't know he's hours away from meeting his wife, but since I know it, it's hard for me to not blame him for still going after Robin.

I don't think it's unreasonable that Ted wouldn't notice her in the band. I don't think people really pay that much attention to the band. Also, he's going to be moping around about his unrequited love for Robin, so that'll keep him pretty busy.
There was a scene at the end of an episode last season that flash-forwarded to Robin dancing with her father at her wedding reception, and Ted's looking at them sadly. Then he catches a glimpse of the mother in the band and smiles. So we know that he notices her at the wedding, but he might not talk to her until they're on the train platform.
And his hand is bandaged on the train platform, and Future Ted has said that the wedding day doesn't go smoothly (plus the creators have said in interviews that something will happen on the wedding day that makes it kind of crazy), so maybe there's going to be some kind of situation where the party ends early and Ted doesn't have a chance to talk to her at the reception?
