This year we tried something new: putting it in ziplock bags and parsing it out, 3 candies per day. Fast forward to today. DS2 didn't eat any of his during the day. It's DH's b-day and so we just had pizza and ice cream. The rule is use it or loss it, so now DS2 is now pounding his three candies. I'm a little disgusted.
I think we need to try something different. What are your house rules?
The 12 year old still has most of his. He probably takes 1 piece for lunch, and has 1 piece for snack if he eats a good dinner, and has enough time (he's a slow eater with an early bedtime.)
My guy is still very little, but he gets a piece a day if he asks for it. We eat some at night. Why not just let it roll over?
Because then DS2 would have 6 tomorrow, which seems excessive. The problem is my kids are very different. DS1, giving the opportunity, would eat until getting sick (like a dog). But, he is a rule follower. So 3 a day works for him. Whereas, DS2 would most likely self-regulate if he was on his own: 3 today, 1 tomorrow. But he is competitive with his brother... so he will pound the candy to be even. :?
They get one piece per day IF they remember. But they only get one dessert, so sometimes they prefer a cookie. The bags were still half full from last year on Halloween morning when I tossed the rest in the garbage. I fully expect for the same thing to happen again.
DS can have two pieces after dinner if he cleans his plate. Most of the time he does not remember to ask. If he is acting up it's the first thing he loses.
They get a piece or two (if they're small) for dessert if they've earned dessert that day. They got to choose out their favorites and then we bagged up 3 giant zip lock bags full of candy last week and brought them to a dentist who was participating in Operation Gratitude. So now we only have one giant zip lock bag of candy. LOL

I meant, instead of taking it away just tack it on to the end. So, if he has 30 pieces of candy instead of eating them in 10 days he eats them in 11 or 12 or however long it takes him to eat 3 pieces a day.
We still have a full bucket full. She can have one piece if she remembers to ask for it, eats a good dinner and behaves fairly well throughout the day. She usually forgets to ask for it.
Before we went out ToTing this year, I threw a ton of candy out that was still in her pumpkin from last year.
All of this except the last year's pumpkin bit.
We keep the candy she gets from various places on top of the fridge. Each new event cleans anything leftover (I take it to work or H takes it to his office). She gets loaded up whenever there's a pinata at a birthday party or a parade, etc. I will say we still had a couple Easter things in the bin when I cleaned it out to put the Halloween stash in this year.
My daughter just turned 3 and has some candy left (she didn't get much). She gets one piece a day, but doesn't always remember so some days she has candy and some days she doesn't.
My girls have barely put a dent in theirs. I've been letting them have a piece after dinner, but it hasn't even been every day.
Eventually they forget about it, and then in a few months I'll realize we still have it and finally toss it. This happens with every candy-giving holiday.
We have a huge bucket still and that's after I tossed most of it in the freezer! We had a few Halloween events before the 31st and it was so nasty on Halloween we stayed home. I had a piƱata we didn't use from dd's b-day and dumb ass dh was supposed to get 1 bag of candy. What does he do? Buys 2 bags of 150 pieces! It was just our 2 kids!it was the good stuff too! Snickers, Twix, Reese's pieces and peanut butter cups, m&m's. ugh! My kids have super sweet tooths but forget about it daily. I do put one piece in their lunches. I'll toss it come Easter when they get more!
I didn't even think to see if the dentist was buying the candy and I like the Switch Witch idea!
The rule is use it or loss it, so now DS2 is now pounding his three candies.
Perhaps change that rule to one bag per day - skip a day and that's okay but still only one bag?
We put it up high and I used it as potty training bribery. Which was a baaaaaad idea. Those candies are sooo much larger than the mini trader joes peanut butter cups I'd been bribing her with previously (and which she forgot to ask for half the time). On the other hand, she was thrilled. Luckily, she was very excited about giving out candy to kids at our house so we turned around at the end of the block. She didn't have that much and I "sampled" a few bigger pieces each night to help speed the process.
We were party hopping Halloween night and DS lost all of his in the chaos Halloween night. I felt so bad. DD has been sharing hers with him and they are almost through it all. I have been eating some after they go to bed so it's not all on them. They've each been eating 3-4 pieces a day. There are really only Sweet Tarts left. Yuck!
Nope. I saw about 5 posts about choking on here and fb, teared up when I told ray about Sara's post and watched as he stood up, walked over to the zillion pounds of candy and dumped them in the trash.

We still have some. The good stuff is starting to get thin though. DS is too young for candy, but the rule for DD is she gets to eat a few pieces Halloween night then picks 10 pieces that are hers. She can eat them whenever, no restrictions, but when they are gone, they are gone. Her pieces lasted 3 days, which I thought was pretty impressive for a 5 year old. I think she has had one other piece since then after dinner one night.
