I'm curious if this is normal for people. A coworker just got engaged and we were talking and he mentioned that the engagement ring was the biggest purchase he's ever made. He bought a condo last year, so I said "really? more than your down payment? That was the biggest check we ever wrote!". And he said YES! I was just really surprised.
I know I shouldn't have said anything, although we're pretty open about that kind of stuff since we both bought places recently. But I was so surprised. Is that normal? Which cost more, your e-ring or your down payment?
I know how much his condo cost, so either he put next to nothing down on it or he spend a LOT on that e-ring...
Yeah, our DP was at least 6x the cost of my e-ring. H didn't tell me how much he spent for a while, and I was flattered when I found out. But he definitely could have spent less and I would have been just as happy. We definitely have better uses for the money than jewelry!
We haven't purchased a home yet, but I already know the DP will be way more than the appraised value of my ring. DH didn't buy it though; it's a family heirloom.
The DP was 18x the cost of my engagement ring. I can't imagine wearing and being responsible for a ring that cost as much as our DP, so I am glad there is no comparison, lol.

Since I've never bought a house, my e-ring was more expensive, but it was not the largest purchase we had made. I've paid more in college fees than my e-ring cost.
House/horse were the biggest expenses. I could not fathom spending so much on any ring, especially since its something you take off. On ever had gotten was an ering- which was still pretty cheap in comparison to most peoples. Only 150 total for the two rings, we were on a tight budget at the time.

DP by far. Unless you paid cash, which would mean no DP, or DP was given to you by someone else, I cannot really fathom how one could or would spend more on an e-ring than a place to live...
E-ring I think. When DH bought our condo we only had to put down $6k and I think my setting cost a little more than that. The diamond was an heirloom though so free.
