no. that kid has his days and nights mixed up or something! G goes to bed late, like 9:30, and will sometimes sleep until 9am, but other times wakes up at 6am or 7 am
Eh. If it works for the parents and the kid then it works. The first year is so ridiculous with sleep issues. I'm not judging anything that works and doesn't hurt anyone.
If this kid is sleeping 18 hours a night and gets up at 5:00 p.m., that's putting the kid in bed at like 11:00 p.m. And if I got up at 5:00 p.m., I sure wouldn't be ready to go to bed at 8:30 (which is what time my 15 month old goes to bed). But 18 hours seems like a LOT of sleep if it's not broken up.
My son sleeps a TOTAL of 18 hours a day probably, but that's including sleeping for 12-13 hours at night and his nap times, it's not all at one time.
Swear to god, my kids are marathon sleepers and neither of them has ever slept 18 hours. Edith routinely slept 14 hours straight at that age and Freddie sleeps about 12, but IMO 18 hours is excessive.
Is he getting enough to eat when he is really only awake for 6 hours a day/night? Also I would be concerned he was sleeping in a wet or dirty diaper. I would assume the 1-year-old is producing at least a wet diaper in his sleep. Do they not wake him up for changing?
I just think it's odd, and IF IT WERE ME, I would probably get it checked out because maybe he has food allergies or some other kind of allergies. (Lots of sleeping can be a side effect of allergies)
That's pretty odd, IMO. I would be concerned. 18 hours of sleep at 12 months is far outside the range of normal and I'd be concerned that there was a medical issue.

I don't wake my kids for changing wet diapers. Of course they only sleep 12-14 hours.
I would be talking to the pedi if I were them. Maybe it's totally normal but I would be having a conversation about it with doctor.

I get it for your case (and many) but if this child is truly sleeping 18 hours straight without any liquids or food or diaper changes? That seems off to me. I hope the child is okay and this is just mom's bad math or something.

If it were my kid, I'd be concerned. If we're talking 18 hours straight and not broken up into naps, that seems really excessive for an older infant. A lot of learning and development happens at that age. That said, I don't know if or how I'd mention it to her. But yeah..definitely doesn't sound normal.

At that age, it's NOT typical or normal. Even if he's going to bed at 11pm, I'd expect that he would be up by noon at the latest the next day. Sleeping 18 hours straight on a consistent basis would give me reason to worry.
18 hours without a diaper change, food, or liquids? That's not only not normal for a one year old, it's not ok. His blood sugar has to be crashing to dangerously low levels in that time.
Is the kid meeting developmental milestones? I guess if he's crawling, vocalizing, and acting peppy when he is awake, then maybe it's okay. Personally, I still would want this checked out. Sleep apnea can cause kids to sleep abnormal amounts.

Lucy used to go to sleep around 10 or so pretty regularly, but she didn't sleep anywhere near that late. 10:30 at the latest. I don't know how someone could think waking up for the day at dinner time was normal.

DD2 was sleeping a lot and it turned out she was very anemic. After even just a week on the iron supplements it was crazy how much more energy she had. If this mom isn't exaggerating then I think it's absolutely worth a visit to the pediatrician just to rule out any issues.
