His partner (seems weird somehow to refer to his s/o as his boyfriend given they're in their 60's) has a legit job but they just get by. There may be other ways they/he make(s) some money, but it's not enough for them to splurge. They basically, yeah, Just Get By.

Does the state where he thinks there might be money have an unclaimed property unit with a website? In California it's run by the state controller's office and you don't need anything more than a name to find out whether there is money being held for someone.

What happened to his real identity? In California you can claim an individual's unclaimed property if they are dead (or "dead") and you are their heir.
