... where would I start to learn how?
I have been doing "rigged" sewing projects like using the iron-on hemming tape to create drapery panels and such. But there are a lot more things I would like to know how to do, such as making pillows, throws, runners and other fabric-type crafts. The thing is I know nothing really about sewing besides a basic hand stitch.
I started by taking classes at a local quilting/sewing shop. A lot of them offer free or discounted classes when you buy your machine. I got three years worth of free monthly workshops, have been going for 6 months, and have learned a ton.
Depends on how you learn best. There are tons of videos out on youtube that can be very helpful. My local library has tons of great sewing/craft books. I learned pretty much from trial and error (and remembering the basics from middle school hom ec ). There are so many great blogs out there that can help you learn how to do pretty much anything.
i just took a class at a local sewing shop - bernina. you didn't have to own a bernina (or any machine for that matter) and they weren't pushy about getting you to buy one. it was a beginner class and really great.
i also found a great girl on youtube. i think her name is the craftygemini. she is really good about explaining things really well.
