I thought that it was widely known that Avatar was basically the John Smith/Pocahontas story.

I agree that this is pretty widely known. However, that movie didn't need an original plot. Avatar was the first movie in 3-D. The movie was an experience just due to the new technology. Having a familiar, easy to follow plot allowed the audience to focus on enjoying the visual experience.
