Oh my dear God. Rachel looks terrifying. She scared me when she first came out, and now she just weighed in at 105 pounds. That poor girl...I'm concerned she's very ill.

I agree with you. Her arms look like bone and flesh - they do not look like someone on a healthy diet.

I thought the exact same thing, she looks emaciated:(
She's frightening. I can't really look at her, and I hate that she'll win. This is not a good healthy example!
Really, are any of them? What they do and how they lose the weight is not healthy in the least.
Well no, but sadly not everyone realizes that. It's already screwed in the way they go about it, but when you have someone win who looks so emaciated, it's even worse, I guess?

I watched last week and in general am inspired by their decision to do something drastic to make a major life change in order to save their lives, and the determination to push through, maintain a strict exercise and diet regime to get healthy. I also love the support they give one another. Even though they are all competing for the money it is not really about that. But Rachel, woah, girl.

I haven't watched in several years. In my 300+lbs days, I used to watch...with my big bowl of ice cream in hand. I was always in awe, but never thought it would be possible without quitting my job and "losing weight" full-time. After I started my own weight loss journey, I started watching a season and was just disgruntled at how unrealistic this is...it's a system that was set up to fail. You cannot maintain that kind of regimen for an extended period...I don't think they're really forming the healthy views on eating/exercise that you need to make a consistent lifestlye change.
Also, I have seen the pics of Rachel floating around the internet today...she is definitely emaciated and I think she took it way too far...that can't be sustainable. I saw somewhere that she is 5'4" which would give her a BMI of 18, which is underweight...so she's gone from one extreme to the other and now is being celebrated for that? No thanks.
I really don't like when people throw around the "gross, too skinny" card but after seeing her, wow. Not so much about her weight or her BMI because an underweight person can be just as healthy as an overweight person, when using those indicators. All that being said, the way her face was sunken in and shadowed, the weird fluff of her hair, ugh, she looked sick. I hope she gets the help she needs and I hope to God the show addresses this.
How much time is there between the final week on the ranch & the finale? She was at the point where she really shouldn't have been losing weight so quickly anymore, so what in the hell went on with her diet once she got home? It looks like she lost even more weight (% wise) at home as she did on the ranch, and that is scary.
It's just sad. I imagine there's a huge emotional/psychological component for these contestants, and I just hope she hasn't slipped to a bad place.

I guess what do they expect when the prize is awarded based on percentage of weight lost? Eventually someone was going to take it too far. They should have some kind of rule about not losing below the lowest acceptable weight/BMI for their height or something.

This is a good point. I would catch parts of the show now and again, but didn't see a picture of her until I went looking after opening this thread. That is sad to see.
IDK, I think "healthy weight ranges" are arbitrary. People are quick to dismiss the the BMI scale when speaking about being medically overweight, but think being underweight is always indicative of a problem.
Clearly she wasn't looking healthy, so there is an issue here. But I do think a small-framed female could be "underweight" according to the BMI and still be fine. Maybe the show needs to eliminate the at-home portion? Have the last weight-in at the ranch be the one that counts for the prize? Or have each contestant be monitored by a health professional at home?
There is no good answer to this. The entire premise of the show is fucked up.

I definitely agree with this. I know a few people who would be considered underweight. I guess the difference for me is they have been that way their whole lives. That's their normal & where their bodies are happy/natural. Some people are just small/skinny. Not a big deal.
The difference for me with the show is that it's not her normal. It's not the weight her body naturally found with normal exercise & healthy eating. The only way for her to get to that size is with drastic/dramatic actions, and that's a little scary to me.
Whatever, though. It happens every season, so it's not surprising, but I think she's been the most dramatic result in awhile.
I love that the show does a good job of demonstrating that you have to put in the work to lose weight, they share a lot of healthy eating tips and tricks, and they really show the emotional journey that the contestants have to go on to conquer their fears and issues that caused them to gain all the weight in the first place. That said, it IS unrealistic to think anyone could sustain this for any length of time, unless you're a professional athlete that gets paid to train.
Rachel made me sad. That was not a good representation of what "healthy' should look like. I have plenty of skinny, underweight friends who TRY to gain weight, and thus, don't throw out the "she's to skinny, that's gross" card very often, but Rachel did NOT look healthy. I'm infuriated that someone who was such a strong, triumphant woman on the show went overboard to win.
But she did win….$250K might make me do crazy things too.
I agree that she looks too skinny and a lot of the weight loss that takes place on the show is healthy. I wish there was a way to still make the show entertaining while doing a better job of presenting sustainable lifestyle changes. My local gym does a biggest loser style weight loss challenge and it makes me angry every time I see the signs. For me to win I'd have to get down to Rachel's weight.

I lost quite a bit of weight 12ish years ago and got to a point where it felt great, but wasn't normal. I couldn't easily maintain that weight with regular diet and exercise (for me). I've put on prob 10 lbs from that weight and feel this 5lb range is where my body feels best/healthy. Perhaps she can maintain that low weight until winning, but I doubt it's going to be healthy for her to keep it there - or feasible with normal diet/exercise.
In the spirit of not shaming someone who just did something really amazing, it probably should be pointed out that regardless of how she lost the weight on the show (assuming no EDs), she is considerably healthier after the show than before the show. I'm sure a physical would show amazing improvements in her blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc., so really, good for her! I just hope that the next time we see her, she's not 95 pounds. Hopefully she can find a balance that works for her, and if she does happen to gain 10 lbs, she's OK with that and it doesn't mess with her psychologically.
Oh my dear God. Rachel looks terrifying. She scared me when she first came out, and now she just weighed in at 105 pounds. That poor girl...I'm concerned she's very ill.
She looked SKELETAL. It was awful. I'm convinced she's sick (like, ill) or has a severe eating disorder.
ETA: Or she's a damn good gamer and purposely got down to 105 to win the competition. Still, I'm not sure it was healthy.

Yeah, I doubt it was. I read somewhere that a lot of the contestants will severely dehydrate themselves for at least 24 hours up to the finale. The Season 1 winner even came out and said he dehydrated and fasted so much he started urinating blood. Yikes!
My friend in MN texted me that they watched the news last night and they were interviewing people who worked out with Rachel at her gym. They said she took 3 spin classes/day, and I'm guessing she did more on top of that. I run a lot, but I doubt I could ever handle 3 spin classes each day!

I'll play devil's advocate here. 3 spin classes/day...sure, why not? I often ride my bike for 3-4 hours at a high intensity. I don't see the difference. Anyone that has done a sub 5 hour century bike ride has ridden hard for a long period of time.
It's a game. She may have gotten down to that weight to win the prize money. She may have no intention of staying so light. At 5'4", 105 pounds isn't out of the realm of healthy. I know several very healthy cyclists that are about that size. Some of the skeletal looks is all of the loose skin. (Her face looks terribly thin, though!)
Also, don't forget that she was an Elite athlete swimmer in high school. She HAS been this size before. It may not be healthy for her now, but hopefully she can find the balance between healthy, active, and fit--not just skinny. I will agree that she looks too thin for her frame. Gaining 10-15 pounds would probably be good for her.

In the photos they showed of her during her peak swimming, she looked amazing - healthy, muscled. I seriously doubt she was ever 105 at her same height as an elite swimmer - not if 105 on her is so skeletal looking.
I had just said to my friend before the finalists came out that I was so happy to see so many of the contestants looking so buff - they were all showing their guns and it was awesome. Then Rachel came out and I about died. We were absolutely horrified.

I guess what I worry about is the backlash that she will, and other winners have faced, should she gain any weight back, even if it is where her body is supposed to be. I've read interviews of former winners who have had horrible things said to them any time they went out to eat or just walking around. It's horrible how ridiculously ignorant some people can be.
I havne't seen it yet. I saw some pictures online. she doesn't look emaciated to me. thin yes. and the arms often look all jacked up after that kind of weight loss because of the extra skin.
she's like 5'4" so while 105 is on the small side, it's not THAT small.
also, the money. if I was in the running for 250K I could get scary skinny too. people thought Helen was too skinny at the finale and she put on like 15 pounds pretty shortly after. Olivia and Danni were also not far off of where Rachel is BMI wise and both of them put on 15ish pounds post finale. so I guess I don't understand why this is a problem now? why THIS contestant?
