I am white, and I have no idea what that means. It is apparent from my pasty skin that my knowledge of tanning beds is minimal at best. Perhaps this question would be better directed at unnaturally brown people?

"orange people, I have a question"
She should write John Boehner's office. I'm sure he could provide an answer!

"orange people, I have a question"
But the orange people are the fake tanners. They won't know.

Well, I'm only 1/2 white, but I'll answer anyway
Like others have said, I think the beds come in different levels. I took her 'layers' comment to layering of tans. I know some girls that go in several times a week in order to 'build up' a tan, like layering it on. So rather than 1 crazy session where they burn, they'll do several smaller sessions. Maybe that's what she means? Either way, she's nuts.
savy, that makes sense re: the layers. I'm googling "layering fake tan" but the results are all coming re: fake tanners. But if you think about it, people are talking about a "base layer" so layers in addition to the base make sense and she's talking about a fourth layer of tan then it would be her base layer +3 more.
If she keeps this up she'll end up looking like this soon:
Most my friends tan regularly and I've been a few times. The layers usually refer to how many times they've tanned previously. So she's probably gone 2 or 3 times this week for maybe 10-15 minutes and is working her way up to a color she can maintain. Then she'll only have to go a couple times a month instead of weekly.
I stopped tanning after I got burnt really bad on my ass after only 13 minutes in a level 3 bed (I think). I do miss my little star though. Maybe, I'll put a sticker on when I go to the pool today. LMAO.
Eh, like I said, I'm not an outdoors person so I rarely have a tan. I figure a week in the sun and a few sessions at the tanning salon each year are the equivalent to the amount of sun a NORMAL PEOPLE gets.
I'm not very worried about it.
Good idea, because normal people dont get skin cancer.
Maybe it means fake tanning? When you go in the booth, the sprayer thing sprayed her four times? Thats what I would think. This lady doesn't seem intelligent enough to be talking about layers of her epidermis.

I could go on and on about the disgustingness of tanning salons. Wiping up pools of strangers sweat is by far one of the worst jobs you can get out of college.
LOL at the thought of getting a base tan via tanning bed as a "good" idea
Anyways...I put on like 80 when I am on vacation..and then I reapply. I hate getting burned. I am a mix but I don't want to take my chances.
I just avoid sun. I can apply and reapply and reapply 70-100 spf and still burn. It sucks. You know it's bad when your skin turns purple.
DH doesn't burn as badly as I do, but doesn't much care for it, either. So we avoid beaches and stay relatively covered when we can, using sunscreen when there is no other option (like hats, sunshirts, etc).
I am the whitest of the white girls with a history of basal cell carcinoma. No way in hell I'm getting near a tanning bed, much less knowing the lingo.
I don't know how she would know how many layer of her skin she tanned.....she probably means that she has been tanning that many times. The level thing is about what type of bed she went to. You can either go for 15 minutes in a dinky bed 5 times a week or you can go for 6 minutes in an awesome level 4 bed that has a special face tanning light and shoulder lights for 3 times a week.
I know I'm the minority here, but I will go tanning if I'm about to go on vacation and spend a lot of time in the sun. If I don't, I blister from burning so bad (even with the highest SPF available reapplied hourly). It has also previously helped with my acne.
Like an idiot, I tanned for a few months in my early 20s - a co-worker talked me into it, because we got a "deal" if we signed up for unlimited tanning together.
I 100% blame the huge, ugly scar across my back and the one on my ribs on those few months of tanning. Didn't seem like such a deal when I was paying the co-insurance to have pre-cancerous moles removed.
I don't know about the layers, but the girls at the salon I went to claimed the higher level beds gave you more intense "tanning" rays instead of "burning" rays. Right.
