My university had pretty serious home ex programs back in the day.
One of the things the students got to do was bring a real live baby into their dorm and keep it alive for the semester.
I am not shitting you. They had the college girls raise an orphan to practice their skills. I will google and see if I can find any articles about it.

My MIL majored in it back in the day. It's basically a way to get your MRS degree or become a home ec teacher if I recall.
My mother got a home ec degree from one of the top universities in the US and it was a science degree. Not all home ec majors were crap.
My mom got her home ec degree from U of MD. Besides sewing, cooking, etc., it included lots of child psychology (one prof later plagiarized parts of my mom's project on birth order in kids she baby sat).
