Corporal punishment and paddling are allowed in school

Does your child attend a school with corporal punishment? If so, how do you feel about it? When I was a kid in England, this was pretty common but I tought it was illegal in the US in modern times. (this post was inspired Charles Blow's OpEd piece in the NYT today.)

I was surprised to see PA banned it in 2005, really. And thankful.

A teacher tried to paddle a kid in middle school (I graduated in 2003), and he knocked it out of her hands and ran out of the school.

Now it's all quiet rooms and restraints and escorts. YAY.

no, definitely not allowed in our schools (or state). I think that is one of the issues that would honestly make me consider private school for our kids, even if the academics of the public school were decent. Even if *I* opt out of it for my child, I don't want my kids in an environment that teaches physical force is acceptable for punishment, ever, nor do I want them potentially seeing their friends deliberately hurt and humiliated by authority figures.

It's allowed in Texas (shocker!!) but it is not allowed in a local school district.

I went to school in Texas and was never hit or paddled. The only teachers that would do so did it to the football players and the Coaches had the paddles in their offices. They did use them and it was not for playing bad on the field. It was for serious things and the kids parents signed a consent form for them to do it. My memory is pretty hazy but I believe one time it was after the Coach found out a player had driven drunk from a party with friends in the car. The parents had zero problem with the use of the paddle. I have zero clue if this is still a thing at the HS.

I went to grade school in MS and it doesn't surprise me at all that they top the list. I was never paddled but my sister was. My parents were beyond pissed. We had moved from the north and weren't used to the fucked up ways of Mississippi, that's for sure.

It's allowed in Kentucky but the vast majority of school districts have rules prohibiting it, so the map may be slightly misleading.

I still can't believe that there is legislation pending in Kansas to allow parents, teachers and childcare providers to spank kids hard enough to leave a mark. Right now they are allowed to do it, but can't leave a mark.

IL still had corporal punishment when we went to school and my mom signed the paper denying permission. Which is interesting, because she had no problem hitting us at home.

Banned in my state, thankfully. There is no way in hell I would allow someone to strike my children. I don't hit them, their Daddy doesn't hit them, I'll be damned if someone else is going to hit them.

We were pretty close with some friends that use a "no no stick" on their kids butts.

We met them through church and hung out with them a ton. When they finally told us about this stick it made me sick to my stomach. They asked us if we wanted to order one. We said with huge eyes - no - we don't hit our kids.

It's banned where our kids would go to school. I remember it NOT being banned when I was a kid in Virginia, but maybe I'm making that up? I have a recollection of being really afraid of my first grade teacher who used to PICK ME UP BY MY EAR and throw me out of the classroom because I thought she would hit me.

It's banned here thankfully, but it was only banned the year after I graduated where I grew up. I had a math teacher who used to clap two erasers over the heads of kids who acted up so the chalk rained down all over their heads and faces.

My first grade teacher had a system when her students would act out. First time you'd get a warning. Second time, she'd take her giant wooden paddle off its hook on the wall and put it on her desk. Third time, she'd put the paddle on the offending student's desk. Fourth time, she'd take the kid out in the hall and allegedly paddle him/her. The paddle had flowers painted on it.

I had a talking problem as a youth (I'm still working on it), so it didn't take long before I got to phase four. But all she did was take me in the hall, wave the paddle in my face and threaten to "whoop my fanny" if I continued to talk in class. I went home and told my mom that the teacher was going to hit me with some weird-looking boat oar (I had no idea what it was). My mom had a little chat with the principle, and different methods were used to get me to behave in class from that point forward.

I'm pretty glad she didn't actually "whoop my fanny" with that paddle. Although, thinking back, she was a tiny old woman, and I'm not sure she even would have been able to swing it without falling over.

Not surprised to see my state, Texas, still allows it. When I was in school kids could choose detention or swats from the vice principal. And when a student wanted swats I *think* the parents had to give consent. Why the hell a parent would consent a school official to administer swats is beyond me. But then again I don't know their lyfe.

We still had it in NM when I was a kid. Parents had the option of being called in to spank their own kid, allowing the principal to do it, or neither. My mom worked at the school, so she opted for the parent being called in, but she knew we were never bad enough to need a spanking, she just wanted to know immediately if we were in trouble so she could give us a very angry talk.
We did get spanked at home, but it was for pretty serious shit. My parents would've never done it at school.

It isn't legal everywhere in FL, mostly in panhandle counties I think. I know it is allowed in the county my H is from and where my inlaws both teach. 

Also, I hear people talk about spanking their kids all the time here. Like moms yelling in Target about how if their doesn't quiet down they are going to get smacked. I actually heard one mom, when complimented on her toddler son's behavior at the pedi's office, say "I know, I haven't even had to spank him much!" The nurses at least looked shocked. I mean, I know it happens, but I can't believe how loud and proud some people are about it.

When I lived in Mississippi people hit their kids in public all the time. Once DH and I saw a dad drag his 3 year old to the car in a restaurant parking lot and we could hear him hitting her and then they drove off. We called the police and they blew us off. Don't even get me started on how little they give a crap about animals. I'm so glad we don't live there anymore.

I was paddled as a teen one time when I lived in Texas for talking during class. I didn't have any friends and wasn't talking. It was awful.
