I live in So Cal and I live in the suburbs, but a short drive to all the fun/cool places. I have kids so a safe area is my top priority, then cost and then fun. I like where we live and there is a lot of places to walk to, but all the cooler stuff is a little drive away. It works well for us.

Do you like the location of your work? Can you get your fix of fun, quirky places near your office?
I currently live in the middle of nowhere, which I don't like...it's a 45-minute drive to work, a 15-minute drive to the nearest grocery store, and there are no specialty stores nearby. But, there are specialty stores and great restaurants near my work, so I can drop by after work...in fact, I stay in town for at least an hour or two after work most evenings. This makes me not miss that stuff quite so much when I'm at home. Would something like that work for you?

I say stay in town. I am assuming #2 is the condo/townhouse we talked about. Saving that amount of money is huge and I would want to be close to home especially with Stink's health right now.
I'm house poor but I have a short commute--20 mins walking through a park or 10 mins on the T. I love my neighborhood (you've been there and I wouldn't sacrifice it for much) BUT I wouldn't be house poor and have a long commute. It does hold me back though as I will, and can, only work in the city because I sold my car to be house poor and live in my awesome neighborhood.
