If you're open to the UP Grand Marais is gorgeous. Right on Lake Superior. Nice hiking options. You can hit Tacumenon Falls (yeah, I didn't spell that right) which is really fun.
Anything on the west side that's on the water is going to be pricey & likely already booked.
If you're interested in the East side you could look at Harson's Island or Port Sanilac.
But one of my most favorite places is Caseville. It's low key (except during Cheeseburger Fest) and has a great beach.
I'm sorry...we have a cheeseburger fest here in Michigan? WHY didn't I know this?!?

I really don't know how you can not know this!! It's pretty awesome actually. We're spoiled because our friends have a cottage there so we get to go, otherwise everything is booked up FAST. They have a parade, sand castle contests, live music everywhere, arts & crafts shows, stuff like that. We always get our cheeseburger fix at the Fire Hall and they are amazing. Plus my fire fighter H won't let us NOT support the FD.
I skimmed, but I didn't see anyone rec Torch Lake. We had friends that had a house on a smaller lake that connected to Torch and it was my favorite week in summer when we went up there. You could stay at Shanty Creek/Schuss mountain resorts, which are ski places but open during the summer too. We stayed there a lot when I was younger.
I thought about suggesting Torch...but we vacationed there last year and it was really pricey to stay at a place on the water. Plus, if you don't have access to a boat it's kinda pointless since Torch is famous for its sandbar, which you need a boat to get to! Although the location is great because it's close to Sleeping Bear Dunes.
I'd also recommend TC, Charlevoix, Petoskey, etc. But as others mentioned, a little prices. However, you can check some of the smaller towns near those places which might be a bit cheaper if you don't mind driving a little.
If you want to go waaaaay up into the Upper Peninsula, you can hit up Marquette. In the summer there are a of awesome things. You could do a little UP tour, hit up Marquette, Munising (glass bottom boat tours) Grand Maris for Pictured Rocks, Paradise, MI for the Ship Wreck Museum, and end in Sault Ste. Marie for the Soo Locks!
This thread is making me miss Michigan and is making me excited to go back this summer. I'm so looking forward to being home and lounging on a beach.
So many great reccomendations In here. I'm partial to TC, Torch lake, Saugatuck and Grand Haven. Mackinaw island is great, but not cheap. Higgins lake is nice too, but not much to do other than hang out at the cottage.
I grew up going to our cottage on Lake Huron. It's a bit colder than Lake Michigan, but there are some cute towns on its shore too.
janegold. I didn't know you were from Michigan!! I am too!

Macinac Island is amazing. We used to go when we were kids. No cars allowed-amazing fudge and gorgeous. I'm actually going to head up there this summer again
