It was amazing and heartbreaking. I cried for hours after seeing it.
I haven't seen it, and this makes me think I can't handle it.
I heard it is going to be shown in schools as part of the curriculum. I can't remember where I heard that or for which schools. Might have been the Today show.
i heard this on NPR and Montel Williams was the one backing it.

Oh, I still think it will win. All of the Best Picture noms that I saw this year were flawed in some distinct way. The best of them was 12 Years a Slave. The story makes up for some of the choppiness I felt in the storyline and some of the mediocre acting in the bit parts.
I saw it with a group of friends and we had to huddle together in a car to debrief before we could drive home. It was very powerful and the story is amazing. I fell like its one of those movies you have to see.
I also avoid a lot of movies dealing with race because they upset me for a long time afterwards but I'm glad I saw 12 years.
It's going to take me a few years to be able to watch it. Intense movies, especially those surrounding race, haunt me for a really long time. Hell, I'm still not over seeing Precious and Crash a few years ago.
Precious fucked me up for months. So heartwrenching.

Hmmm Precious had no effect on me because I read the book (Push) several years ago and knew the entire story. I think 12 Years will exist in my thoughts for weeks if not months, and not in a good way
It was good, but I was more wrecked by Hotel Rwanda. Tht movie is my gauge.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using proboards
I couldn't make it through the intro of Hotel Rwanda. I started thinking about my cousins, political and social unrest in that general area, and freaked the f out.
Then wait to see 12 Years. Hotel Rwanda wrecked me for days. 12 Years, not as much (but, I also knew the story, learning it in school in upstate NY).
I more than likely won't see 12 years a slave. I just recently watched Fruitvale Station and cried through the 2nd half of that film I know I won't be able to watch this. Though I want to!
