It's annoying as hell, but hey, it's a big investment, and I want to love the house, location, area, etc.

Hell yeah 20 years is a huge investment! We were only thinking short term when we bought our house and I wish we had looked more long term because I love what we've done to ours to make it our own, and I hate that it's not more conducive to be our forever home because of bigger things like layout and shitty neighbors (just one neighbor and it's the asshole that moved in with an otherwise nice old woman. Everybody else, literally everyone, is fantastic). I would have chosen differently if we had been thinking of family planning when we moved in. I don't even mind all the work we put in, I mean besides the plumbing we signed up for everything else. Thank god my H is handy. and we've only got about 10k more to go until its perfect (and then appliances start failing)... Lol. But really... be picky. There are houses out there. You'll find one.
