I review college admission applications and its disheartening. I also work with professional women that havent read anything beyond People, Twilight, and now Shades.
I used to as well and, sadly, none of these examples surprise me at all.
I am not surprised at all. I am a HS teacher, and most of my students don't know the four basic parts of speech. Oh, and prepositions - forget it!
They don't read, no one made them memorize things like prepositions or their times tables back in elementary school, and they don't actually care about learning - they just want to do the bare minimum, just enough to earn credit.
Not everyone is like this, but there's definitely a growing trend. It's disheartening - and scary!

There was a change in teaching spelling methods right between me and my sister. I was taught the old school way of word construction and she was taught to sound it out. To this day, she kills me with how she spells some things.

See, as I recall we were taught both of these techniques. We were supposed to sound out new words BUT we also had lessons/homework devoted to spelling, and then later more in depth lessons in vocabulary including definitions, synonyms etc. I don't understand why it has to be one or the other.
