My sales team is supposed to take part in a 3 1/2 day training thing at a hotel in Orlando. There are a couple different sessions we can go to that are spread out over the summer. Our boss told us that if someone can't go, it's probably ok because the trainers will probably come to our office at some point in October and do a scaled down training for those who couldn't attend the hotel training. (But I guess that's not definite)
I should add that I have never had to travel for work before.
Am I weird that I would much rather just do the training here at the office, rather than spend a bunch of nights in a hotel, probably having to share a room with a co-worker? I know that parts of the training will be enjoyable but still. It doesn't appeal to me. I already told my boss I could go in Sept but I want to tell him I would rather just do the in-office training if possible. I know he'll think I'm weird though. (He likes to goof on everyone)
Would you want to go to the hotel training? I always get mild anxiety over traveling with people so this figures into that... I never feel totally comfortable sharing space with people unless it's my husband or sister.
If there is a coworker that you like and you could go in the same trip with, yes it sounds like fun. For me and my job, I work with so many people from so many different stages in life that I wouldn't want to go with the majority. Most of them are good people, just still like to party their asses off and that just doesn't do it for me anymore, at least not with the random jackass. Now if I'm going to waste the brain cells I'm only going to do it with someone I truely love. Lol.

Not strange at all. I would only want to go if a close coworker could go at the same time and share a room with me. If there was no one that I could see myself having a good time with, I'd probably just prefer the in-office training.

I travel for work and I had to share a hotel room ONCE with a co-worker. It was so awkward and everyone complained and we never had to share again.
That being said, you could always drive there and back and not stay at a hotel if it's just Orlando.
Or you could ask your boss if it's okay to just do the in office training? If he says no, then there is your answer.
Next question would be, "do I have to share a room?" If that answer is yes, ask if you could drive each day and get reimbursed for mileage since you don't feel comfortable sharing rooms with co-workers.
Yeah getting reimbursed for mileage is sweet! Whenever other stores ask for support H goes ( pre baby) because the extra pay is awesome. They reimburse much more than it actually costs him.

Yeah, see if I could have my own hotel room, I'd be ok with it, although it's still annoying to have to go do this for 3-4 days. But having to do it PLUS the awkwardness of rooming with someone does not make me happy.
I travel for work quite a bit, and have never shared a room with someone. Honestly, I wouldn't go on a trip if there was an expectation that I was rooming with someone. If the company is taking me out of my home, the least they can do is spring for a room. In my opinion

I decided to email the woman in charge of everything and ask about the rooms. She said:
"All attendees (from Representatives to Managers) will share a room. Unfortunately, we do not have a budget for individual rooms. When you are scheduled for your session, I can certainly handle any request for you to be paired up with another female from your team if you like"
So that means I can room with my co-worker who signed up to go the same session as me. That's better than nothing-- she and I are friendly. But still... that doesn't mean I am excited to share a room with her for 3 nghts, lol.

Could you pull a "I'm not comfortable sharing a room, would it be possible for me to drive to the sessions each day and get reimbursed for mileage?"
Sharing a room with a co-worker is awkward. God, I hated that week I had to do it. I seriously was up, exercised, showered, ate, and was out the door before she was up. Also, I went to bed 5 hours before she did each night which probably explains it.

I used to travel all the time for work, but as a sales manager I rarely traveled with another female, so sharing a room was not usually an issue. I only shared once and it was someone I was really close with so it was no big deal. If you're friendly with her and can get past the whole rooming together thing then I'd go. But then again, I'm always up for traveling....

Lol, I will probably feel the same way as you about the awkwardness. All in all, I know it's really no big deal and will be fine, but I still don't like it
It's just the idea that if they're gonna bring the training to my office anyway, I would rather go to that instead of a training that's away from my comfort zone. So I'll have to monitor this whole situation and see if the in-office training will actually happen.
