Good luck! DH is a pilot who is gone 3-5 days, home 2-3 give or take. It's never ending, and it's hard. Usually I do a good job of not letting him see the toll it takes, but I pretty much had a break down about 30 min ago.
Basically, it's survival. I agree with having plenty of things to do. I know it's hard to take a 3 and 1 yr old out and about, but I'd do it as much as you can stand it. Don't be too hard on yourself. Try to plan play dates if you can to give yourself a "sort of" break, and it can give yourself some adult interaction with the other parent. If you need to let them watch tv, do it. It's not going to hurt them, and it may save your sanity.
He can still ride his bike to work. Tell him not to be a pansy
To be fair, he's worried about riding it through west Garfield Park at 8:00 at night. It's probably a fair concern. But he should ride it to the Metra which is probably the same distance he's riding now anyway.
I wasn't being too serious I wouldn't want to ride through west Garfield Park past, well, 6PM. If I'm being honest, I don't want to ride through west Garfield Park ever.
Riding to the Metra stop is pretty feasible, though.
Fuck me. Saying, "Hey, you might need to plan more time because shit blows up in your face" is mommy martydish? Seriously?
Or saying, "I just don't get it because I don't have that frame of reference?"
YES I"M A SUPER HERO MOM! WHERE'S MY GOD DAMN FUCKING CAPE?!
For me, it's more than just planning for extra time in case something comes up.
It's not being able to grab a break at the end of the day, when DS is at his crabbiest, by handing him off to S.O. when he gets home. It's about trying to wrangle 2 dogs on three walks a day who are afraid of the stroller, who go apeshit when other dogs in their yards bark at us on our walk, or who try to take off and nearly tip the stroller when they see a squirrel or stray cat. I'm sure I'll survive, but I'm not exactly looking forward to it.
I am coming off of a one week stint home alone. We did a few dinner dates with friends (DS is 14 months and shockingly well behaved at restaurants) and we had some easy, go to, out of the freezer dinners. Especially if I know he is going in advance I make some extra spaghetti sauce, frozen hamburgers, and stock up at Trader Joes. And Clubhouse Mickey is our friend for the evening cranky time.
Redheaded Baker- I am so there with you. While picking up dog crap 2 nights ago (and wearing DS) another dog sniffs at my dog, my dog lunges to play and I end up on my butt. At least the baby didn't hit the sidewalk. I so could have killed the other guy who just STOOD there mouth open with his freaking dog. Grrrrrr, get away from us so I can pick up this poop and move on. Take home message- stroller is the way to go when you have goofy dogs.
