That is horrible. SELF should be ashamed. Plus no offense to anyone who reads it, but isn't it kind of a "fluff" fitness magazine? Wouldn't they want to promote health to anyone? Who cares what you wear if you're out there doing something?
The irony is that SELF is a big Breast Cancer supporter and every October they have a cancer awareness issue. Shame on them.
Yep, I get SELF subscription free with my race for the cure registration. Like it was said before, its not like they purposely went out to say a cancer survivor was lame for wearing a tutu. It was a series of mistakes, from poor editing/research, a shittastic move asking to use her photo with out telling her what it was for, AND to me, the worst part was making fun of anyone making healthy lifestyle choices.
I think that if they had noticed her racing bib and had done a little research and actually talked to the woman on the phone, they really could have had a chance to do something really great with that picture. Raise money, awareness, inspire people. It could have been a really great story, a REAL story. Not just the crap that's usually in that magazine.
I really hope that this is a wakeup call to the people at SELF, and other similar magazines as well. I'm tired of flipping through these women's fitness magazines and only seeing photos of clearly photo shopped fitness models with articles about how to get flat abs in 5 minutes.
Running Tutus aren't my thing but I'm not sure they set off the "BS" meter lol.
Off the mark.
Ditto this.
TBH, they kind of get some credit from me. I would be way too irritable w/a flippin tutu at mile 22. I'd be ripping that damn thing off, so go on with your bad selves tutu runners! I couldn't do it. Mainly though, I don't get why people care so much about what other people do.
SELF issued an apology on their FB page but I'm not buying it.
Their apology: On behalf of SELF, we sincerely apologize for our inadvertent insensitivity. I have personally reached out to Monika and her supporters online to apologize for the misstep and tell them we are trying to remedy the situation. At SELF we support women such as Monika; she is an inspiration and embodies the qualities we admire. We have donated to her charity and have offered to cover her good work in a future issue. We wish her all the best on her road to good health. Most sincerely, Lucy Danziger
Yeah, I would never run in a tutu because it would irritate the hell out of me.
TBH, when I see someone in a tutu, I would immediately assume they are not really racing the race.
BUT the article was poorly written and a stupid idea to begin with. SELF deserves whatever crap that comes their way since they are a second-rate magazine.

Hummm not to be snarky or start a debate. BUT. The winner of the Tinkerbell 1/2 has run in a tutu. Attachment Deleted
ETA: I have to agree that running in a tutu is not usually my thing, I did at Tink and Princess this year because I was running with a friend and we just had a good time with it. So not something I would do at every race, but not something I would say is lame either.

She is even more badass because of this in my eyes, and I'm not a tutu wearer.

Is the Tinkerbell half marathon an elite event? lol.

Well ok, it's not Boston, NYC, etc. But there is an elite field at RunDisney races ( I thought??) and to say that someone who decided to have fun while running can't race is silly to me.

I looked up the winning time from the Tinkerbell half last year and it was a 1:24, which isn't an "elite" time. That's also neither here nor there. It's just not an elite time at all. It's a good time--a good enough time that will place a woman in the top of races in a lot of places and win in a lot of others--but it's certainly not "elite."
The overarching problem with the Self article--and..it *almost* seems like you are about to go here too..is that
You can't tell what people's purpose for doing an activity is--by what they are wearing lol.
It's incredibly stupid for Self to take a random picture of women they don't know and attach meaning to the picture--without asking "hey, do you think wearing xxx makes you faster?" or Hey, do you think wearing xxx is just for fun?" or "hey how about a little of both?"

LOL!! Ok were on the same page. They were stupid on so so so many levels and for them to tear down something a silly as someone having fun at a race is just wrong. I have seen plenty of crazy to inappropriate attire at races, but I always think "At least they are out here..." and when I hear anyone remark about it I say the same thing to the person making the comment.
The fastest female at the Conwy Wales half marathon wears a tutu as well. And though it's not an elite race, it's got a 3 mile serious uphill section, so it ain't no fun run.
I'm not a tutu wearer, but I have done a couple in fancy dress (remember the ill-thought out reindeer suit?) and I totally agree that getting off your arse and taking part is the point, regardless of what you are wearing. If someone feels good wearing a tutu, it makes me pleased they feel good.

Ok, so I have debating saying anything about this…
The girl in the pic who won Tink 1/2 is one of my IRL friends. She is the most lovely woman, and so I am feeling a bit defensive on her behalf. The statement that brought her up was that someone wearing a tutu isn't actually racing the race. So, while a 1:24 isn't an "elite" time (not sure why that was even brought up, as amateurs also race races), it's fast as shit, and she most certainly is racing races. She gets a lot of attention here for her elaborate tutu costumes (she is sponsored by a costume maker), and makes a big impact on young girls in our city.
And when a chic in a tutu smokes by a bunch of fast (not elite, I guess I need to clarify) guys, that is badass. I've never met a soul that knows her that doesn't think she is very special (anecdotal, I know).

Actually no one said she wasnt racing lol.
also. This post is slightly weird to me
Sorry but...girls smoke guys in all types of outfits. Not sure why a tutu is somehow more badass? Its not.
your friend is a good influence on girls in her community because of who she is. Not what she wears
Im not sure why you are salty about my saying shes not elite. Shes not. Today the top usa women ran 1:10 at the world half championships. They got like 5th and 6th lol. Its not taking away from her achievements.
I admit I've worn a tutu to run a few times, one of those including a half. Its not a habit, but occasionally I do runs that call for "fun clothing". Whether I had run it with or without the tutu, I was still running it competitively. No I don't win, my times will never be awesome. But I just need to say that judging if someone is "racing the race" based off what they are wearing is a bit ignorant.
Who cares what people wear to run/race in? So what they wear isn't my style. Whatever. In my marathon last year, I got passed up around mile 20 by 2 guys in full costume dressed up as Batman and the Flash (I'm talking masks and wigs, the whole shebang). No I would never run a marathon like that, but shame on me if I'd judged them. They clearly kicked my butt and looked good doing it.

mshandy's post said that when she sees someone wearing a tutu she assumes they aren't actually racing the race.
her outfits are different and unique, and bring attention to her. Attention that may be there regardless of what she wears, but it is a conversation piece, and a novelty that is fun for a lot of people.
A tutu is not what is badass, I think some people see the implication of "i can be girly and fun and still kick ass" to be badass. ETA: I should clarify that I don't think someone is more/less "badass" based on their clothing. But, even in this post, there is a "go girl" attitude that is palpable.
I'm not salty about you saying she isn't elite. She isn't. I said she isn't but is still smoking fast, and still racing the race, which is a response to mshandy's post, not yours.
She is a friend IRL. I would defend any one of you if you were brought up in a forum where you couldn't defend yourself. It's not personal, I just can't in good conscience let it slip by without a word.
I do like that you called me salty, lol. I do feel a little hung over and salty

Kams, I am sorry that I did not think of the fact that she could have an IRL friend on here and did not mean to use her as an example to upset anyone. She was the first person that popped in my head when the racing comment was made because she posted in a FB group or something??? When this all started. But I am glad to hear she is as nice IRL and that she kicked ass in her tutu at Tink :-)

I don't think you need to apologize. Her pics are used really frequently - she races tons of Disney races, always podiums, and always is dressed as a different princess - she is marketing gold for Disney races! And yes, she is really lovely
Eye roll at Self, but I am so over magazines. I don't even read my professional magazines anymore. I think I get a free year of Shape for a race I did. I never look at it - straight into recycling. As a teenager, magazines gave me such a poor body image. I just hope I can convince my own daughter not to be fooled by the photoshopping and bad articles.
As for tutus, I don't care what people wear to race. Personally I don't dress up, but if other people want to that's cool.
