Some doctors do it in third tri, some do it in the hospital after the birth. I have not really researched which is currently best practice, but I think the third tri shots tend to happen in areas with lots of pertussis.
Is this common where you live? Nobody I know here has been given the shot as a standard. My OB nurse said that because our babies are home the first year (out of daycares) the risk is low. Hmm?
Just in the last two or three months there were two cases at the elementary school where I teach, and two more at the high school. At least 2 were on fully vaxed kids. My 7 month old has been tested twice when he had a cough.

My state had several infant deaths due to pertussis in the year.prior to DD being born. Hence why my OB was hot on me & H getting our shots when I hit 7/8 months. My HMO actually offered free shots to the spouses or parents of moms-to-be regardless of insurance coverage.

There is a problem with pertussis in the community. It is standard, and there is a push to get dads and grandparents done, too. The risk is higher in remote northern locations, but they treat us all the same.
Ladies, don't forget about grandparents. Other than the parents, they usually have the most intimiate contact with newborns and are just as likely to pass it along.
Just an FYI, Pertussis is really bad right now. My hospital had ten new cases in a single day a few weeks back. I don't want to start a pro-vax anti-vax war, but if your kid is too young to get the vaccination and you haven't gotten it yourself, please consider it. It's in the DTaP (Diptheria, Tetanus and Pertussis).
We had a baby die from pertussis in our hospital several months ago. Not quite two months old, otherwise perfectly healthy. We have a large anti-vax community locally. They are morons. That may be an UO, but I'd love to see them explain how pertussis is "just a cough" to that baby's parents.
Septimus, the Pertussis portion wasn't added to the vaccine back in 1999 or 2000. So you weren't protected from it. If my memory serves me correctly, it's only been in the Tdap (for adolescents and adults, DTaP is for kids) vaccine for 5 or so years.
