And I've known too many Americans who treat animals like they're just some disposable toy. Can we just hate on all the crappy people and not just France?
I don´t get the whole FRANCE IS THE MOST AMAZING PLACE ON EARTH people.
I read an article some years ago that they were ditching their elderly during the country's biggest heat wave on record....it happened in August. People didn't think to check up on their senior family members and didn't claim their bodies until they got home from vacation.

According to all my pet FB pages that I 'like', July 5th here in the US is THE biggest/busiest day where people leave their pets at shelters. Never really understood why. Maybe Americans are doing the same thing?

Are you sure the stat is for people actively surrendering their pets? Or is it just the high influx point for the year? It would make sense for it being the latter, because a lot of dogs probably get out of their yards during the fireworks. I was involved in rescuing one of those dogs a few years ago. We let her stay with us overnight, left her with the shelter on 7/5, checked in later that afternoon and she had already been recovered by her owners.
I didn't know the French thought that way about pets. They don't have dog and cat food over there? I thought the French allow dogs in their restaurants? I'm thinking Sex and the City when Carrie is in the pastry shop and that mastiff is sitting next to her? That was Paris though so maybe they're more dog friendly. Very disappointing to read.

I don't really believe you read it.
Guess not. Thanks!
Btw, a lot of my post was in reference to MrsSavvy's post
My DH is French and all of his family doesn't understand why we 'let those animals' inside the house. Pets live outside, no matter what the temperature or conditions, and they're fed table scraps rather than balanced pet food. They were disgusted at the idea that I have cats that live INside my apartment and I buy specialized cat food for them
THERE ARE TONS OF ABANDONED ANIMALS IN AMERICA??? SINCE WHEN???
And yeah, I think you misread the posts, bte. Because every single one I saw was that July 4 is a busy day for shelters because so many dogs get spooked by fireworks and run away.

If people were going to abandon their pets in anticipation of being away for the July 4th holiday......wouldn't the number of surrendered pets increase BEFORE the July 4th holiday?
I honestly have no clue. All the sites kept posting pictures of sad dogs stating that the 5th was the busiest day for surrendered dogs and such. I was surprised to see it!!

I wasn't referring to the entire country as a whole, rather those that I knew. I'm sure they sell dog/cat food there & there are people who don't act like described in that article. But unfortunately there are a lot that do.
I showed DH this article & he was kind of not surprised. Only comment was that normally when you leave for a long vacation & leave the pets behind, you have a neighbor come over to feed it. He's never heard of anyone that didn't do that, but he obviously doesn't know everyone.

I lived in France and was told that the reason so many homeless people had dogs was because they're not considered homeless, or or not considered loitering, or whichever thing it is that they don't want to be considered, if they own a dog. So a lot of people just get a dog to keep with them for selfish reasons. Not the same thing you posted about, but another weird dog tidbit about France.
I don't know it it's still the case, I lived there 16 years ago.
