So, H's 10 yr old trailblazer needs a repair that is about 1/3 of its value. (If that.) I currently drive a 2011 Camry. We will be replacing the Trailblazer with an SUV for me and H will take the Camry.
What we want: AWD/4WD Room for two car seats and a 30 lb dog Leather (so much easier with kids and pets) Used (budget is $25K or under) Mileage under 35K Preferably a 2011 or newer
We've thought of: Subaru Outback Honda CRV Hyundai Santa Fe Toyota Highlander
We initially though we wanted a third row option, but I really think we are only having two kids plus that helps keep us under budget. But we did consider a GMC Acadia and Ford Explorer for that reason.
I have been looking at the Highlander. I really like it.
We are also hunting for a new car for next summer but want the 3rd row option for friends.
We currently have a suv with the 3rd row and have never used it. I really like having a huge trunk instead of the faux 3rd row. I want a 3rd row that doesn't move.
Other options we liked were the Tahoe, Acadia and the Enclave
We almost bought a Sante Fe, but ended up with a Kia Sorento instead and LOVE it. They're almost identical cars, but Kia gave us a better deal. You can get it with or without third row seating, so that option might not be a deal breaker. It's just an easy car. It drives really well. It's really comfortable. It's big enough for what we need without feeling like a tank.

It was between the Highlander and Cherokee for us when we were car shopping. We went with the Cherokee, but it was a really, really tough decision...the Highlander was super nice!
I wanted to test drive the Santa Fe, but never did. I loved the look of it, though.
And just a side note...I used to drive a trailblazer, and I still miss it to this day. That SUV was awesome...drove so smooth. Not like an SUV at all.

I love the Toyota Highlanders. My Dad has one and it has been a great car for him. That being said we looked at them when we shopped for a new car last year but it was out of our budget. We ended up getting a Dodge Journey and love it. It's a crossover rather than an SUV but it is AWD. It has the third seat option but we never use it, just means with it down the back is big enough to carry lots of stuff. I have also herd great things about the Santa Fe's.

MH wants an A7, I laughed at that hahahahahah
Yes, my parents live OOT so it would be nice to be able to all pile in the same car when we visit each other. That's my main reason for wanting the third row.
I'm pretty sure this is what we're getting at the end of the year. We can only transport one car to Hawaii, so the plan is to trade in our F150, Mustang, and Escape for the Explorer and take that and his motorcycle. I think we're going to rent one to take a trip in May to see if we like it. I love the way they look though.

My neighbors have one and it is so pretty. Inside especially.
The Higlander is a great car, I love Toyotas. I've also heard great things about the Outback. Subaru's are super safe, which would be a huge draw for me.

I was really sad to give up our European SUV but we are very happy with the Highlander as our family/utility vehicle. We gained a lot of space in the middle row which is great when your husband is +6ft and you have 2 carseats.
Subaru! I love Subaru's, and they are reliable and safe. The Forester is actually larger and cheaper than the Outback., our next car will probably be a Forester Gas mileage is also good for an AWD vehicle.
I love my mini van . We have a nissan quest and I love all the space and the sliding doors. Be cool like me and drive a van.
Haha, I was thinking the exact same thing. Love my Honda Odyssey. More in line with what you asked, though, BIL and SIL have a Subaru Forester and love it. Have had no problems with it, not too expensive even with leather, and a good amount of space.
We love our outback (basically identical to your description). It very comfortably fits two rear facing Car seats and our 40 pound dog. We took a 10 road trip (minus the dog) and with the roof rack, we fit well. Great in snow. We couldn't be happier!

Update: we test drove a new CRV and Pilot today. (So maybe we increased our budget, oops.)
Loved the CRV. Leather, AWD, drove very smoothly and like a car. I'm just a bit concerned about the size.
However. I did NOT like the Pilot. It did not drive smoothly IMO and felt like I was driving a truck, plus I was not impressed with the third row access.
Tomorrow night--Subaru dealership to test Outbacks and Foresters!
I have a 2013 Dodge Durango Crew and I absolutely love it! We got it in December 2012, when they were basically giving them away! It is a $39,000 model (leather, navigation…) that we got for $30,000. If you buy used, you would be able to easily get one for $25,000. The new body style is really attractive and the interior is totally functional. I love my car so much that I would get it again if I needed a new car. It has 3 rows, so lots of space for 2 car seats and a big dog (with the third row down). We fit 2 infant seats, 2 high-back boosters, 3 adults, an umbrella stroller, a full-size stroller, and all of our gear in my car once. I couldn't believe how much we fit in there!
