THOSE are the top assignments available. I'm sure they are lovely places, but we would have to spend 5k in winter gear for the family/cars, because we have never lived in these kind of winters.
I might need to get a tanning bed so we can all get our year-round Vitamin D. (Kidding, kind of)

Yeah, your car shouldn't need winter gear. The only place we've needed it is interior Alaska. But, yes, you'll probably have to expand the winter wardrobes a bit. At least for you and your H they shouldn't be yearly purchases! For little kids I suggest eBay or consignment because you can get practically new gear for a reduced price. But I'd buy new boots.

LOFuckingL. I am currently in a hotel room in Indiana on our way to Idaho before we PCS to Alaska. I've never been in those kind of winters either. Good luck with any of those choices! So far, I would say this is slow torture

Are you driving the whole way up? Or taking the ferry?

Your quote cut off so I can only assume you said 'slow torture'.

Driving. With 3 dogs. By the time we got our orders, there were no ferries available.
Where in Idaho? My son is in Moscow at the north (neck) end of the state and his step-brother is in Boise, south (butt) end of the state. We almost moved to Boise. It's very pretty there. Some real "interesting" people in Idaho but the majority in the big city are moderately normal.
DH moved to Aspen this year. He had never skied before. He is now skiing expert double black and LOVES it. We will probably end up retiring in CO. I recommend it highly!
I'm pretty competitive so I know I would absolutely try it to my fullest extent. Your DH sounds like a badass!

I AM SCARED
Haha. So far, this is our first PCS and it's not going so smooth. At this point, all I can do is laugh. Have you gone through a PCS yet?

Ah. I think the coasties really fill up the ferries, too. I've driven it three times. Once in mid March with my H (then FI) and 2 dogs. That was a mistake - way too early in the season. Once in early June with my sister and my beagle as a pup. And once in late June with 3 dogs, a 10 month old and a 3 year old.
Make sure you stop at the sign post forest in Watson Lake! It's cool and worth the picture to say you've been there. Have you bought a copy of The Milepost?

ID, NE, SD would me by choice in order. I grew up in Alaska and currently live in Chicago. My IL's are in SD, so I've spent some winter time there and it's miserable because they live in the hills.
justkly - AK was 20+ degrees warmer than Chicago on average this year! Not sure where you are going, but really AK is lovely and unlike most places, the cities are prepared for winter! Since you said PCS'ing I'm guessing Anchorage or Fairbanks?

About a million with my XH, but this will be the first for H and I. They always ended up in tears and divorce threats. Lol
Lol. So far we've been ok, but we're only on day 2 of about 14 days in the car. I'm ready to stop at an airport though and pay to ship the dogs to a relative til we get to our destination. They are freaking out
I don't know the back story here, but I would choose Idaho of those. Well, really only Boise. Northern ID is gorgeous but kind of full of white supremacists/compound militia types, and southern ID is a bit barren and full of Mormons.

Awesome. I will make sure to take stop at Watson Lake We bought The Milepost, but I haven't cracked it open yet. I'm a total newb to this PCS stuff. I thought I was prepared, but it's just been one thing after another :/

Best tip: stop for gas when you see it. This is especially important through northern Canada. If you want I can message you which towns we stayed in (limited lodging, long distance between options).
