So, I was posting in another thread about looking at dogs to adopt, and I noticed some things in the shelter listings that seemed off. First, some of the adoption fees are crazy high! The puppy I posted in the Positives thread has a fee of $600! I know you're paying for her to be spayed and donating to support the shelter, but $600 seems pretty steep.
Also, some of the shelters require you to have a fenced-in yard. I live in an apartment. I'm only looking at small dogs. I can see requiring a yard for large, high-energy dogs, but I think apartment-dwellers can be good pet owners to small dogs!
Are these things normal?
And because I titled my post "Puppies!" you probably came in here wanting to see cute puppy pictures, so I'll post some of those, too.
$600 is high. The only rescues I know that cost anything close to that are the Frenchies.
You will find somebody that will adopt to you in the apt. They will just ask for verification that your LL/Apt Complex will allow the dog/breed you are choosing. Some rescues have so many restrictions that I think it's detrimental to the mission of, you know, placing dogs in loving forever homes.

That does seem high, but puppies tend to be high in demand and there are less of them.
I also don't have a yard and it can be an issue. I would research dog walkers, parks, daycare, etc. and be prepared to answer questions about what you'll do in place of the yard.
I just rescued my first dog in October from a local shelter. He's 2 and his adoption fee was $85. Puppies are $150. I had certain requirements that I had to follow up within 10 days of adopting him. A fence was a requirement, a vet wellness appointment, county license and some other stuff that I can't remember off hand. The shelter did a follow up within that 10 days to make sure that I indeed had a fence and my vet contacted the shelter to let them know that he had been seen by them. All a formality. In my opinion, there are a ton of dogs, shelter or people posting things on craigslist for dogs a whole lot cheaper than $600.00. You can buy a purebred for that much. I don't know.. just seems like a lot.

My sweet Mason.Â
Not from a reputable breeder, you can't. From a backyard breeder, I suppose, but those are the types of people contributing to the staggering number of dogs overcrowding our shelters.Â
You may very well be able to get a pet quality puppy from a reputable breeder for that amount. It's not uncommon just important to do your research and know you will likely be waiting a while. I often see byb puppies for more. The health tested puppies aren't being sold to just make a profit and you have somewhat staked the deck in your favor health wise. A lot depends on breed of course.
Are you sure this is a shelter and not a some kind of backyard breeder? Did you see this on craigslist?
With our rescue group, a golden puppy or golden mix is $400 I believe. That includes spay/neuter and all shots. The adoption fee decreases with the pets age. Our requirements are based on the dog's needs and not necessary a blanket need. Have you tried your local animal shelter? I know our local SPCA is very strict about adoptions, but the animal shelter is not.

From a crappy backyard breeder or puppymill both of which contribute to pet overpopulation and the killing of 4-6 million companion animals a year. Just don't.

It was on Petfinder!
I'd still use caution - I think anyone can register on there.
I just have to share these, I found them on my HDD while I was cleaning out some files...this was my first little guy, I had to put him to sleep a few years ago.
I know. I loved his puppy stage! I have conveniently blocked from my memory the bundle of energy he was up until 2 or 3yrs, especially since he's settled into couch-potato life so nicely now.
Did I ever show you the puppy pic I found when I creeped on his original owner's page of Buddy? I'm half glad we got a 3.5 year old couch potato and missed the energetic puppy stage!
I actually started filling out the application, but then I stopped. I'm going to be moving to an island in the next year and traveling with 2 dogs and a cat will be expensive and difficult.

Oklahoma is apparently cheap! Jerry as a 4 month old cost me $100. Callie was free. Leo I got from Second chance (he was old) for about $50. I only know ONE breeder who is reputable (and she quit breeding because she thinks more people should adopt rescues) and they cost $1000. In my cheap ass area, $600 would be BYB territory. I personally prefer adopting over buying from a breeder REGARDLESS of cost, but if you ARE going to go with a breeder, DO YOUR RESEARCH!
I volunteered for a rescue society for years and also fostered. Yes, $600 is high. I agree small dogs make great apt dwelling pets. I would look at other organizations to find your pet match. Some agency/rescue groups require a home visit. GL!
