"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"

I think it's weird and surprising, too.
I remember this crazy-ass bus driver from elementary school named Hope (I can't believe I remember her fucking NAME) and man alive. I swear she must have been drunk, now that I think about it all. She would drive around like a complete maniac, going super fast down residential streets because kids DARED her to. One time she went over a speedbump so fast that we all flew up in our seats. She got fired about a week later.
^this has nothing really to do with seatbelts, just a random memory of the school bus.
I always sort of assumed that it would be harder to get all students out in an accident if someone had to go through and undue all the seat belts. But that is me just trying to rationalize why they don't have them.
I think I read somewhere that the tall seats are to keep them safer in a rear-end collision. I can see how it'd would keep kids from flying into the windshield, but seatbelts seem like they would be much safer. It might be hard to enforce, though...then you'd surely have parents suing because no one made their child wear the seat belt.
The tall seats are of no help if the bus rolls over, though. Getting all of those kids out with seat belts on would be a challenge, too. I have no good solution.

My bus driver in elementary school got pulled over while she was driving us home. None of us were old enough to know why but the cops came on the bus and we were all dropped off late.
Newer buses have seating that is designed to keep the kids in their seats. They are actually very safe and seat belts don't work the same way in buses as they do in cars.

If I recall correctly, they don't have restraints on buses, because in the event of an accident, it would be nearly impossible for a driver to help all of the children unbuckle and evacuate the bus in an efficient manner.
Eh, we ride the bus at Disney or at the airport and it doesn't really concern me. I think buses are more prone to fire, and seatbelts and young children would be a safety issue.

At our kindergarten meeting last night they actually announced that the kids will be using them this coming fall. In NY the buses are mandated to have seat belts, but aren't required to use them. Our school decided they were going to start having the incoming students use them so they will be use to wearing a seatbelt as they go up in grades. Start them young, so they don't know any different.
Just adding to my list of reasons why I am driving Finley to school instead of letting her take the bus.
Are there statistics about this? Are kids safer in cars with seat belts vs buses with no seat belts? I have no idea, but I was just thinking about if a mid sized car rammed in to the back of another mid sized car at 50 mph vs ramming into the back of a bus, which would have kids suffer more injuries?
I was told it was due to the expense of seat belts, and that the buses sometimes sat 3 across (little kids) and sometimes just 2 across (older ones) . Buses are used each day for different schools / runs. So seat belts wouldn't accommodate both ages of kids. Who knows?
When our school district bought new buses, I was excited and thought maybe they'd have them. But No. I was always nervous with 75 little lives on the bus careening down the highways to a zoo or museum.
Buses need seat belts. Kids fall out of the seats just going down the road.

I have no idea, but I will be maxing out at 30 mph on F's drive to school, so I think we are good.
Unfortunately there are other drivers on the road to think about too that speed, under the influence, etc. I guess other posters on here are saying that buses are safe if not safer than cars, so hopefully you'll be comfortable if your daughter ever has to ride one. I'm going to find info about this!

This is what I have heard. That the lack of seatbelts is actually safer on a bus.
It's been years, but yeah, it was pretty bare bones. I remember our bus driver parking the bus on a hill to walk back and yell at us. By middle school, it was a rite of passage, lol.
There are seat belts on Adams bus for his trip to safari park tomorrow. Not in every seat, but they have some. And they have a list of kids who must sit in those seats, per their parents.
I thought our buses didn't have belts, just like when I was a kid, but they all do now. I would think more and more places would require belts in the future.

The only thing that makes me nervous about him riding the bus are all of the idiots that drive up and down our street. There have been 3 times this year that cars flew around the stopped bus letting my son off. I get more nervous when my mom or MIL takes them somewhere.
I have a SN son who is in a 4 point harness, it literally takes 30+ seconds for an aide to unhook him. I know his situation is a little different, but I just could not imagine the liability of making sure all the children were buckled in and making sure they all are able to unhook the belt for just 1 driver and 30+ children. Mass confusion of an accident. What if the smaller child was in the outside seat and someone is trying to get over them.
My husband's friend is a firefighter and agrees that the weight/size/makeup of the bus give them a good safety record. IDK I probably would worry just the same about seatbelts than non-seatbelts for at least smaller kids.
