Add me to the "this is a dumb rule" camp. I don't get it. It's not a finishers shirt, like a finishers medal. It's a race shirt. None of my shirts say finisher on them. If it was something to be earned, only after the race, why not give them out with the medals? Or if people think it's the same, why not put the medals in your race bag? Lol it's different. Basically, I don't give a crap what people do, and I don't understand why others care so much. From 5ks to marathons, people always wear the shirts.
I don't wear them, but that's because I'm picky & almost always in tanks. Most of my race shirts sit in a box.
I don't wear them for several reasons. First, and maybe I will get flamed a little, but I would feel like a dork wearing the shirt to the race. Like wearing the band's shirt to the concert. If someone else wants to, I don't snicker or judge.. I just wouldn't do it myself. Second, "nothing new on race day" is a mantra I follow religiously. Third, I'm superstitious and think its bad luck. And fourth, my tradition is to wear the shirt the rest of the day... I wouldn't want to do that if it was gross and sweaty.
I just don't, so I wonder why people do? Not in a judgy way, it's just something I've never done. It feels like..bad luck or something? This thread has enlightened me.

I'm superstitious too, and don't like wearing race stuff until I've actually completed the race. For longer races, I also need to to test their chafing potential first.
But mostly, race shirts are usually ugly and ill-fitting, so I tend not to wear them anyway.
So, I wore the shirt, and posted a pic for my friends, to tweak them. I was shocked that NOBODY was wearing theirs besides me! Lol, I'm proven wrong this time!
Anyway, no bad luck here, unless you count the course being long by .75. The race organizer confirmed that something went wrong.
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.

See I'd be convinced this was all my fault for wearing the race shirt, but then again racing makes me crazy

Running an extra .75 miles takes me a good 9 minutes, so yeah that's bad luck to me LOL!
I don't, generally because I don't want to change at the race (go dressed to run). My brother who is a more serious runner then I compares it to wearing the shirt of the band you are watching in concert. It's just something you don't do.
In the UK, race shirts are given out when you finish, usually. Can't think of a race where they aren't actually!
I personally would not wear a race shirt if it's a long race because I trust my own gear. If it's a short race, and if I like the shirt and I've been given it in advance then yes, sure, I might put it on.
I wore one yesterday from the previous race as it was an obstacle race and I had done the hard core winter version. I wore it mostly because it's a brag thing and because if it got trashed, I didn't care.
4. Never wear a race event shirt for the (same) race you are about to do. Only rookies do this. It displays a total lack of integrity and might put the bad-heebee-jeebee-mojo on you for the race. Wearing a T-shirt of the race, while currently running said race, is discouraged. It’s like being at work and constantly announcing "I’m at work". Besides, you wont have the correct post-race shirt then...unless you like to wear sweaty, pitted-out clothes on a regular basis. If you do, then go back to the swamp, Gomer.

So, bad luck reversed! The race organizers explained what happened - we were supposed to turn at 6.2 milesish, but the crew doing directions sent us to the end of a pathway and back, making it .66 long. They adjusted everyone's time based on your pace, so I ended up with a 1:57 instead.
