I've never been there, so I can't really comment, but I really have no desire to go. If someone paid my way I definitely would, but if I'm spending money to go somewhere, there's about a 1000 other places higher up on the list than that. DH and I rarely drink and don't gamble, and I definitely don't need all those buffets! It's just not my kind of place.
Ditto a secluded beach on Hawaii, that's more my style

I love Vegas, I am a non-drinker, non-gambler and still love it. I like the people watching, Valley fo Fire and Red Rock, I love the window shopping and the lights at night. I also love that you can eat a light breakfast, lunch and be done with food for the rest of the day. Each to their own I guess.
umm what? eat a light breakfast, lunch and be done with food? what does that mean? why is this unique to vegas? why do you want to be done with food?

This thread took a strange turn. I can't stand vegas. I dont like dirnking, gambling, or eating at buffets. Of course the expensive restautrants and shows are cool but they are pricey. There is stuff to do around vegas, but when talking about the traditional vegas trip, you are generally talking about the strip. Not my bag.

No one here said that anyone has to like Vegas. If it's not someone's thing, that's totally cool. It was the close minded,"OMG Vegas sucks!! It's dirty & stinky & gross & they don't recycle & the reason the world hates Americans is because of the wasteful, overindulgent type of people you find in Vegas!!!!" attitude that people took issue with. Lol

I love Vegas in short spurts of time. If you go there knowing that it is crowded, loud, smelly and over the top, you will have a great time. It is one of those places that you have to take it for what it is and embrace it. I love the spectacle of Vegas. I've been there many times and it never gets old to me.
I have to admit that the last time I was there I was SHOCKED that those people handing out prostitute flyers on the strip were handing them out to children. The made me angry.

that's the sole reason why i dont get how anyone could view that place as a "family destination." unless you never ever ever leave your hotel, they're impossible to avoid.
Yep you are all right! I am a close-minded prude!! You have me pegged! "Golf clap!"
I don't think anyone generalized your whole character as being this way. There's really no need to be so defensive. Listen, I'm with you. While I have fun in Vegas, I'd rather a beach in Hawaii, or even a city trip to NYC or DC or some place like that. In general, it's definitely not my favorite vacation destination. Your over the top generalization of the city as a whole is what people took issue with.

Just got back from Las Vegas last night, & had a blast. We go about 4x/year. When DH & I go, he does some gambling, I hit the spa, we both work out, I shop, & we go to crazy nice restaurants that we can't take our kids to.
I went Thursday-Sunday & here's what we did. To be fair, DH goes *a lot*, & most of our trip is free/extremely cheap, which makes Las Vegas extremely enjoyable. I understand that it's not like that for everyone. ;-) I went with my sister & BFF & it was one of my best weekends in forever.
Thursday - car pickup at the airport, hung out in the lounge drinking champagne until our room was ready at the Encore. Had lunch at La Cave. Took a car to Fashion Show & went shopping. Came back & got ready for dinner. Had a fabulous dinner out.
Friday - got up early & went to the gym. Drank champagne & went to lunch at Olives at the Bellagio. Took a car to the outlet mall & did some buzzed shopping. I couldn't believe what I found in my suitcase last night. ;-) Came back & got ready for dinner. Gambled a litle. Played craps. Had a fancy dinner at Botero. People watched in the lobby bar.
Saturday - got up & worked out. Rented a cabana & hung out their all day. Drank champagne. People watched. Swam in the pool. Got ready for dinner & ate at SW.
Sunday - got up & had brunch at Tableau. Took a car back to the airport

Maybe it is just that I'm older now but I couldn't help but notice things while walking along the strip that never stood out to me before. Stuff that I wouldn't want my kid to see, that's for sure.
Please don't rule out the R&R Vegas (http://stripatnight.com/)
Even if you hated Vegas, it's totally worth it giving it another try. Amazing
Side note, but did you run this last year? And if so did you like it? My brother and sister-in-law ran it, as did a few other people I know. I have yet to hear a positive review of it. I think the idea of running the strip at night sounds neat so I'd love to hear from someone who enjoyed the race. But the reviews I've heard and the fact that they are supposedly going to up the number of runners this year (to 60K!) makes it very unappealing.

the problem was that the marathon ran into the half marathon it was a clusterfuck. and they knew that it was going to happen!
i agree with whoever said if you dont love vegas, you are doing it wrong. but i love people watching, and vodka, and pool parties.

It means the servings are so huge why do you need to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm not sure what's so hard to understand about that, it was in response to the too much food comment made.

Have you been to a Vegas buffet? Just wondering--because they are really big. Like you can really fill up on food. 8-D
If you haven't been to one then it would be hard to understand that you could eat at breakfast and lunch and then not be hungry for dinner.

I agree. I was just signing in to say I don't think Vegas would be my cup of tea, either (never actually been, but have had some conferences in Reno and even that is too big and flashy for my tastes). But now I think maybe I should back away.

No, I did not run last year (I ran it 2006 - 07--I think it was under different management.). I had blast when I ran it--I'm sad that is not the case now.
