I just kind of take four or five 2 inch measurements and average them out.
Has that worked in the past with lace? The important bit about boarders is that they keep everything flat, which allow for you to make better measurements of the swatch. Another thing to keep in mind is that gage is typically listed as a 4" measurement. If your only measuring 2" bits you may end up off but a couple stitches and if you're off say 2 stitches for every 4 inches of garment that will add up to something significant over the course of the garment.

The 2"/4" difference is pretty easy to account for, especially if you're averaging everything out. It's never created a problem for me in the past.
Although since I'm double checking this with the overall width 32 stitches should take up a border wouldn't be a bad idea at all.

I had a feeling the 2"vs 4" might figure itself out when averaging.
I'm not sure what is happening to me. I'm usually the one getting yelled at for half assing swatches and here I am all Pro-Swatch.
The pic of the yarn you posted on the craft board appeared to have a lot of semisolid gray with dashes of pink. I like the idea of that a lot more for this sweater than the reverse.

There is very little pink/purple in it. I think the issue is that all of the pinkish purple pooled together in two patches and the greys did not.

Yeah I figured that is what happened. But if it happens all over it will take away from the beautiful pattern. That is all I meant by my comment - does the shop have a semisolid in grays? I think it would be so beautiful!

Not unless they have gotten in a new shipment today. I think you're right that it would look good in that though.
So pretty, and I am so jealous. I can't wait until I can do that.
I like the new yarn you picked out
Did you find something,to make, with your knitpicks haul?
I'm thinking a baby hat and booties to start? The yarn is pretty thin so I'm thinking I would be better working on something small with it? I'm working a SUPER simple merino baby blanket right now
It's so good. The only local store that stocks it sold me moth larvae last year and thought it was NBD. I miss my easy access hard, but I want bugs eating all of my yarn more.
