Personally, I'm not a fan of true 'capri's'. I like an ankle pant though. I don't like where capri's hit on my legs and i have long legs and they still cut them off and make me look stumpy. But that's just a personal preference.
I had never even considered that capris might be "out." I kind of agree with Miso here that asking if capris are bad is like asking if tank tops are bad - some are, some aren't . I was looking for some pictures and came across this blog post that seems to agree with what most of you are saying:
I really don't get the whole "cut yourself off at the widest part of your calf" argument. The widest part of my leg is my thigh, but no one is saying that shorts are universally unflattering.

because shorts allow the rest of your leg to be seen and give you "shape". When you're cutting off everything but the bottom of the calf/ankle, you just look like you have cankles even if you don't, and your leg becomes a shapless blob of heaviness.
Maybe I am showing my age but I would never refer to the bottom pants as capris (having lived through the 90s resurgence of the capri). The black pair are just ankle length pants (had no idea they were referred to as crops). Capris end in the calf region, not the ankle region.
Now Audrey H's pants posted by @misoangry? I would call those skinny capris and if you can pull them off like she did? Perfection.

Meh, I think it depends on your body shape. I have doughy thighs, but trim calves/ankles. The "shape" that shorts show off on me is not a good shape. I'd rather keep that part reined in, and show off the part that looks good. I totally get it if people are saying they're not in fashion, but I disagree with the universally unflattering part.
I don't think this...
...looks like cankles or shapeless blobs of heaviness at all.

I'm too old to care if they're fashionable or not. I'm rocking my denim capris right now and they are comfortable as hell. I don't give a damn how anybody else thinks I look in them. First, shorts like the ones worn in the photo Serenity posted actually cut me in a worse place than my capris do. Second, I'm stuck home all day with a bunch of contractors and even my capris beat plumbers butt hands down. Third, I'm really not interested in what other people think, besides DH. And he wears stuff around the house that looks far worse than my capris, but I still love him, so turnabout is fair play.
I'm wearing a gray pair of the "bad" one's right now! But I guess I am pretty old, and they are so comfortable. I would not however wear them on a first date.

I was going to say I love capris, but according to this I wear pedal pushers. Capris and cropped pants looked great on other women but I have never found a pair I like on me.
Are we talking like old people capris...baggy with cargo pockets? Or are they referring to like fitted ankle skinny crops as capris? I need pictures before I can judge accordingly.
Are ankle skinny crops considered capris? I think I consider capris stopping higher up on the leg, so I guess that's where my NOOOOOOO thought came from. I don't mind ankle skinny crops.
I don't consider them the same thing - I'll wear ankle pants, but not capris.
I'll be honest. I wear my jeans rolled up to about 2 or 3 inches above my ankles 90% of the year. My thighs are so big that I can't wear shorts. So that's the closest I get. In the 100+ degrees in summer I need to let my ankles breathe. Lol

I just measure the capris I'm wearing to this chart. Whew! I'm not in the danger zone!

I think if you find a pair that his just as the calf starts to slim down to the ankle you are good. They also should be fitted. Baggy capris don't seem to work on most. I also think wearing the with a least a little heel works best. I cute wedge is my favorite.
Uh I guess I wear old lady capris. Oh well. I love them and they are so comfy. Also I'm a short mcshorter so they only places I could find petite capris were in old lady styles/brands. Old lady= my mom wears them. I don't care.
So yes as long as they aren't cargo capris.
Also I hate skinny pants/capris. They look terrible on me because they show off that my legs are hugely different sizes. As in my left leg has little muscle tone thanks to my cerebral palsy.
ETA: according to the picture I'm actually wearing pedal pushers. Oh well.
