Friendship/relationship wise.

I had been planning to meet up with some friends at the NYC Comic Con later this year, but this emergency vet visit is going to cost us almost $2000 and now I doubt I'll be able to afford it.

When I informed said friends, one of them said they didn't understand why people pay so much for vet care when (and I quote) "you can go get a new one instead"



I was shocked and appalled at their lack of compassion and now I don't know if I even want to be their friend anymore.

And if I don't respect someone, I'm probably not going to be friends with them very much longer.

It would depend on whether they were really serious. I know friends who say stupid stuff like that to me, but I know they don’t really mean it. I also know acquaintances who truly feel that way. I don’t know if I’d cut off all communication, but I’d definitely want to be around them less. That’s just horrible.

It would depend on a lot of other factors, but it would certainly change how I felt about the person, and I would keep my distance. I wouldn't necessarily make a big deal about it, just slowly let things die between us.

It doesn't matter what their view of pets is. This was something which was important to you, and they dismissed it.

I'd lose all respect for them and slowly start becoming annoyed with everything they said. Thus, friendship over.

I get that some people are just not pet people so they don't quite get it. But I would like to believe that my good friend would realize, regardless of his/her feelings about pets, how much they meant to ME and would act accordingly.

It's not that the person doesn't get the attachment to pets... but that the person doesn't take my feelings into consideration.

Some people just really don't care for animals. Ideally friends share interests but maybe they couldn't fathom spending 2 grand on a pet they wouldn't own. Are there other things you notice that make this person crappy or is this the first incident?

Yeah, I would pretty much stop all contact after receiving that.

It would for me. If one of my friends was so insensitive about something like that, that mattered to me, I am not sure I could continue the friendship. I wouldn't start a war, but I would probably let it fizzle out.

I don't know, it would depend on how close this person was to me. If it was a good friend, I would probably tell them their comment didn't sit well with me, and try and talk about it. If they had a track record of making insensitive douchey comments like that, and I wasn't close with them in the first place, I probably wouldn't have much to do with them anymore.

It would depend.

I have a friend who just is not an animal person. When I mentioned that we had to get pet sitters for our mutual visit to Montreal, she said, "Haven't you gotten rid of them yet?" Or something to that effect.

She's a wonderful friend and I love her, so I just let it roll off my back. We don't see eye to eye on pets and we never will.

Depends on if they knew how attached I was to my dogs. My close friends (who I'd probably travel with) would know and I'd tell them straight up that it was inappropriate, hurtful, and to go fuck themselves.

Someone who was going with us because of mutual friend? I'd just be ticked and roll my eyes. I also have confirmation that they don't have a soul.

I made it a point to let MH know that I didn't want my MIL filled in on the cost of my dog's emergency surgery last month, because that is the exact reaction I would expect from her. She can be such a dick about those types of things.

Her current mission is to remind us, when we move to the east coast next month, we really don't have to take the pets with us, and why don't we just leave them here? 8-D

that said..I spent 4k for my dogs surgery and I still would not stop being friends with someone because they said that.
