ok. So he's just crazy. They're all just crazy, and there's nothing we can do to control crazy. Awesome.
:/
Why is it all or nothing? No, IMO, there is nothing we can do about people who snap or WHATEVER you want to call it except hope they don't do anything henious.
You can't force someone to seek treatment if they don't want it.
Once again, I never said being mentally ill justified any criminal actions.
Back to the actual news article - dude had ALLLLLL kinds of history of violent actions. He shouldn't have been allowed access to a firearm. That was basically my entire point.
Lots of people have histories of violence (see: prison).
You just said that violence is a symptom of mental illness.
Are all these violent offenders mentally ill as demonstrated by their violent activities?

I never said violence and mental illness were mutually exclusive. I said violence and anger are symptoms of some forms of mentall illness.
I don't have the data on all violent offenders and their mental health status. I know that there is a plethora of literature that connects the fact that prison populations have higher rates of mental illness than the "average" of society.

The Mother Jones article is good to read. I was floored that in the states with the most restrictive domestic abuse/gun-ownership areas still have about 40% of the domestic violence cases that involve guns.
THAT IS ENTIRELY TOO MANY FOR EVEN THE MOST RESTRICTIVE AREAS!!!!
Using my internet statistics I found that there are 117,538,000 households in the US and 39% of those are gun owners, so an estimate 45,840,000 households have guns. If 25% of households also have domestic violence against partners or kids, so if (conservatively) 25% of those households with guns also have domestic violence present, then 11,460,000 households in the US have domestic violence issues AND a gun/guns present.
That sounds downright scary to think that almost 12million households are like ticking time bombs b/c at least 40% of those will end up with a gun-related violent act.
