This whole thing is bottling my mind
There is so much wtf.
This post reminds me I need to have the phone number on my dogs collar changed. She got out once and the neighbours (the nice old couple) called my ex husband who called me at work and was like uhhh your neighbours have Penelope they can hang on to her til you get home.
Usually when she gets out she just goes to the front porch and sits there because she's lazy. But still.
Anyway that was off topic (I'm being hugged by a thousand Vicodin angels)
I need to know more about how this person is coming into her home. They are opening her front door? Back door? Just walking the fuck in like they live there? Where is she when this is happening?
Forget the dog getting unleashed issue, that's creepy as hell. FOR THAT REASON ALONE she needs to lock her doors and get her head examined.
I would be out of my mind if that happened ONCE but 4 fucking times?
I just questioned her more, she leaves the door locked, but unlocked when she puts the dog outside (makes sense, totally something I do too)
I told her to clean off the door handle and never touch it from the outside so when it happens again, there is something to finger print
I do not think it unreasonable to leave a small dog on a lead in one's own yard for an hour, assuming the weather is conducive to it and the dog has access to water .
I'm very surprised that the answer seems to be don't leave him in the yard. While it's not breaking and entering since she leaves the door unlocked , but this person is essentially trespassing. On her property and in her home . They're uninvited, unknown, and unwelcome. I hope she is able to film it and take the person to task here. Your friend is not in the wrong in this scenario, like I said, assuming proper weather and access to water .

I agree with this 99%. I think the interloper needs their head examined. This is fucking insane to me.

What?? Really??
You really would leave your dog in the yard, given the circumstances?

This has nothing to do with right or wrong.
YES. She can stand firm on her platform of righteousness all she wants; someone is still turning her dog loose. My reaction would not be "IMMA PLAY INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU!"

Yeah, this is not at all a "what did she expect?!" or "she had it coming!" situation. More like "that is seriously fucked up, and she needs to do everything she can to protect her dog and herself from this person."
So, on the real, OP, is this friend of yours the type to royally piss off people? Is she likely to have enemies? Cause the more I think about this (and for some godforsaken reason, I CAN'T STOP), I feel like it's gotta be personal. Like it has already been mentioned, someone who was just an overzealous/vigilante dog lover isn't likely to just let the dog roam -- they'd take it in their own house or something. It's like they are intentionally endangering the animal and then putting the leash inside so that there can be no doubts that this was purposeful rather than a case of the dog breaking free of its collar.
Why on earth isn't she at the least getting an alarm when her unlocked door is open? She needs to work outside (or at a window she can look out and see her dog) if she is going to tether the dog where she cannot see creepy as fuck people who seem to wander her neighborhood.

I'm shocked at these responses as well. I would have caught the bastard the second time, that's my only beef with the person. But some lunatic/asshole is trespassing and messing with her dog and property and the answer is to run inside, close the blinds and lock your doors? No the answer is keep your fucking hands off my stuff and mind your own business. Not locking your door is hardly 'asking for it'.

Listen, sometimes fighting crazy with crazy is not the answer.

Where does it stop though? Someone touches your dog - well, why was your dog outside? Someone opened your door - why was your door unlocked? Someone crawled in your window last night...
I don't think I'd just keep letting the dog out without making any changes. But the people here saying 'guess you can't let your dog outside of the house that you saved your whole life for' and saying they basically deserve any bad thing that happens to them for trying to live their lives without locking the doors and windows all day is all kinds of crazy.

No one is saying that AT ALL. Jesus. They are saying to take some common sense precautions in light of some crazy person who is willing to enter your house without permission.
My door is locked any time I'm home. COMMON SENSE.

Say you move to a new neighborhood. You take your dog for a walk and wander the 'hood. At the end of one particular street, on a cul de sac, an agressive dog hops over its fence and comes after your dog. You manage to get away unscathed, file a report, nothing happens. A week later, the SAME THING happens, omg rage! Obviously the owner of the aggressive dog is 100% at fault, and you are doing nothing wrong. But for the safety of your dog, wouldn't you maybe consider altering your walk route?
Same thing here. You're reading meaning into comments that isn't there. People are wondering how the hell she didn't alter her behaviors *to keep her dog safe*. Should she have to? Fuck no. Which is why I think I would personally get a camera to catch the bastard. But NOT getting a camera, NOT supervising her dog when there is a known and consistent danger? That's ridiculous, too. The fact that you aren't doing anything wrong isn't going to make you feel much better when your dog is dead because it happened for the *fifth* time. "Well yeah, my dog got run over, but that's better than living a life of FEAR!" ^o)
I suspect that this person is calling animal control right after taking the leash off, that would explain why they remove the collar too. Some people (ahem, Verona) would rather see a dog in a shelter than tied to a tree.
Good thought, wonder if she should could call them.
She stopped answering my questions, maybe she thinks I am being too critical.
About the Fingerprints, the police actually told her to they want to be able to fingerprint something, but it has to be something no one else touches a lot. It is the side door and she opens it from the inside but rarely enters from the outside. So I was just trying to help her think.
i do think she is doing a lot of things wrong or simply differently than how I would handle it. But, I am trying to support her and listen to how she wants to handle it. I am trying as well to point out what I believe and what others have said here, I think she may have shut down though.
