If it makes you feel better, I have no idea about the bolded. I grew up without MTV and pretty disconnected from pop music. I was a senior in high school in 1999 and had never seen the "Thriller" dance. I caught shit from my friends for WEEKS when that information came out.
I played Exodus the Nintendo game as a kid. I was so sheltered.
If you were black and a SAG member in the 70's, your ass had a part in Roots.
Bet none of these fools know about The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman neither.
I mean seriously though, I'm not trying to dog anyone out but this isn't just history, it's effin pop culture. Do you know the Commodores? Ike and Tina? Flip Wilson? Josephine Baker? Langston Hughes? The Harlem Renaissance? Lena Horne?
This is why we have Black History month, people!!!
And see how well it's worked, btw. You guys all know Rosa Parks but don't know Geoffrey Holder.
This is also why TvOne exists.
I just saw Lionel Richie in concert last month and he sang Sail On. And Brick House. And Still. And THREE TIMES A LADY!!
True story: my first exposure to this song was Eddie Murphy on SNL as Buckwheat in Buckwheat Sings.
And I think of James Earl Jones as Terence Mann from Field of Dreams.
You know. Baseball. Iowa. White people.
THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW JAMES EARL JONES???
I feel like I would remiss if I didn't mention that Alex Haley also wrote for Playboy. No seriously, the articles, okay? I know people joke about reading playboy for the articles but there were a shitton of very well written articles in that magazine before it became a total skank factory. Haley interviewed MLK and a host of others for Playboy magazine.
Um, James Earl Jones will always be Darth Vader. ALWAYSSSSS!

I did read Langston Hughes in high school! And I definitely learned about the Harlem Renaissance.
As as for it being "just pop culture," there was a thread on MM where several posters said they couldn't name a Beatles song because it was white people's music. So I think no matter how popular or pervasive, it is possible for people to be unaware of certain parts if pop culture.
No. No this is not possible. I refuse to believe there are people not belonging to a remote Amazonian tribe who cannot even name a single Beatles song.

I realize the incredulousness is fun, but was Roots a mini-series? A series? A special? When did it air? I have legit never heard of it until this thread.
I'm still scratching my head over that Beatles nonsense. I mean, YELLOW SUBMARINE PEOPLE! I Wanna Hold Your Hand?! I could go on but I just cannot with not knowing ONE Beatles song.
Yes, I'm judging this. Like do they know John Lennon got shot? Not one Beatles song?
What about Elvis?
I feel like gathering up some people and talking to them like this.

I've heard of it, and know bits of the story, but I have never seen it and I could not tell you who wrote it. Same goes to the other books/series in this thread.
I'm not ignorant, these are just not things I know.

*whispers* You didn't know that Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire while he and his brothers were taping a Pepsi commercial and that's when he got hooked on painkillers and why he wore wigs and stuff?
I feel like that was the moment it all changed for Michael. OMG, what do people who don't know that must think of MJ. Did you know about his daddy's crazy ass? About Ben? Betcha yall didn't know about Ben.
How do they get the jokes though, that's what I'm saying. Like if you don't know these things, certain movies and tv shows and comedy sketches become decidedly less funny.

I read Roots in 7th grade. I remember after telling my teacher how disturbing I found the crossing descriptions in particular she told us that was only the beginning and told us about all sorts of atrocities including slave owners using black babies as alligator bait. I guess Roots being the catalyst for my own eyes being opened to non white-washed slavery in America is what makes me go "Whhhhaaat??" when it's not something that even pings on the radar for other people.
And yeah the series is amazing and worth it to buy or rent.

I gave you the details earlier with a video to an interview with Levar Burton, the star.
OK, I legit missed your first post explaining it on page 2, and I skipped over the video 'cause I skip over those out of habit since work blocks them (THANKS, OBAMA!). This show was before I was born, and I haven't read the book. So yep. Totally ignorant of it.

The mini-series is amazing but it will take eternity to watch. It's long.

Well the Beatles landed in the states before I was born too, but I know 'em. Have you ever read The Autobiography of Malcolm X?
please don't say no please don't say no please don't say no
Well, I think I already covered that, but what if I just don't say yes?
