She can drink out of a regular cup but I'm too lazy for that business in case she does spill. Plus, I only put a little bit in at a time so I would have to keep refilling.

I really, really do not think this is a major skill that people need to work on, but I will say that Violet learned how to do it without spilling rather quickly. We were expecting it to be way worse than it actually was. So, if you actually feel concerned about this, I bet your kid would pick it up very easily.
But don't be concerned about it. Like I mentioned, we only focused on it because of speech issues.
She can use an open cup and she likes to use one at dinner. She also liked to have water available all day long, in the car, out and about, etc so the rest of the time we carry around a Take N Toss sippy cup. She likes her drinks to be ice cold, just like me, so I put her sippy cup in a kids koozie.
I've never tried! Yikes it sounds like I am slacking. She will drink assisted it of mine but I've we've given her one of her own. I have one of those practice cups and it looks like we will start this tonight!

An open cup almost all the time. If we are on the go, or I want to let him carry water around the house, then he'll use a straw cup. Daycare mostly taught him this because they required it when he moved up a room at 15 months.

DD is actually a July 2012 kid. At daycare, they are working with her on an open cup. I'm like, "Let me know when she masters that and I'll start using one at home too." Four year old DS provides more than enough spills right now. I don't need more.
Only in the bathroom, after brushing teeth. Supervised.
He has a water bottle the rest of the time, and a sippy for his milk in the morning. I figure the 2x day tooth-brushing drink is enough practise for him. He does fine.
