Hell to the no. My brother lived there for about 15 and years and the two times I visited, I was bored out.of.my.mind. It's just so....touristy. I mean, 2 weeks? Maybe (if I were forced to; it's a PITA to get there. Living there? Nope.

Absolutely. It's on my short list of retirement locations already. Esp if you're military, I would jump at the chance. There's a ton of stuff to do, and you'll have a built in neighborhood of friends if you're in base housing, and those are the two things I hate most about having to move. Do it, and then you can have a gtg at your house.
And another thing to keep in mind if you move there, a lot of the touristy stuff is cheaper if you have a HI driver's license. I think even restaurants have kama'aina rates. (We carried HI driver's licenses when we lived overseas.)
And family travel would likely be affordable assuming they only need to pay for airfare and can stay with you.
No, I would not. I would love to visit, but don't think I would be happy there for an extended period based on things I've heard/it being so far away from friends and family.

Good friends of ours just did it and I am irrationally jealous. They said there are some annoyances (like a lot of places don't ship to Hawaii) but they really are living in paradise. They love it. I am soooooo jealous.
I always think that I would love to do this, but I'm not sure I'd love it when I was there. Two of my friends did this with military husbands and both had babies about a year into living there. That admittedly colors their judgment, but they've found it very hard to be without family. Also, they found it hard to get a job even though they both have common jobs. Also, they've found the cost of living to be very prohibitive, even though their husbands make more.
No. my friends that are stationed there are over it about 3 weeks after they get there
That's the thing I worry about the most. We will see the entire island in 2 weeks and then be bored for the rest of the time there. One of the main reasons we chose not to move to Japan. Another option is Virginia. I really just want to stay in Cali but I doubt that will happen.
We have a chance to move to Hawaii as our next duty station. Money not a factor since the military pays for the move and for the higher cost of living, would you want to live there? It wouldn't be a permanent move. We would be there for about 3 years or so.
We just moved! I see us staying here forever
ETA: been here over 2 months now. we are not in the military and are on the big isalnd so that may be a little different.
Nope, not for any length of time. We are not beach people, I hate humidity (I live in the desert), and we would never live so far away from family and the rest of civilization, that could only be reached by a long plane ride. COL is on top of that.

And if I had school-aged children, esp no bc from what I've read and heard the public schools are not that great. But I guess the same could be said about CA.

My friend just got stationed there and loves it so far. We were stationed there when I was little. I don't remember much, but the pictures are beautiful.
